Brightest LED break light
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:49:58 AM »
Hi all! I know this may have brought up many times, but I was not able to do search on this forum- every keyword I typed in came up nothing. Anyway. I have just purchased my first bike and it's an 78 CB550 (LOVED IT)  Now I need to upgrade my break light first.

I've done a lot of research online and on this fourm.. but which LED is the brightest? I'm looking at the 30LED spider, the Luxeon, and the 45LED bulb. What are your thoughts?

Also, I am wanting to replace the gauges lights to LED. any suggestions on what type of LEDs? And is there a step-by-step on how to?

/cheers!

my 750 gauge LEDs (in my avatar), were a direct fit. pull your old bulbs out, and press these in.
BA9s bulbs from superbrightleds.com  they were the 120deg BA9s-x-x-xV in the dark blue.
<--- thats what they look like at dusk through a white gauge face. I got these for all my tree lights as well.  the yellow one su<ks for brightness, so i went back to a standard bulb for my tree flasher indicator bulbs.
if you have an OEM face, i suggest getting the cool white colored bulb.
they also have a 115x-x45-xT 1157 brake/tail light bulb which is pretty darn bright. its also a direct replacement for your current bulb.

Use the "Google Custom Search". Once you get used to it is is actually very good.

The internal forum search is down and may not come back.

What is this break light you speak of? Is this something that lights up when something breaks?

I tried a variety of LED brake/tail lamps. The only one bright enough to be visible in daylight when I did this two years ago was the Luxeon. Maybe there's an alternative as bright or brighter now, I don't know. Still using the Luxeon 3W from superbrightleds.com. Their current equivalnet product is the 1157-RLX3. They also have a 3-LED unit that's rated 5W, rated as brighter.

 BRAKE light ...not break light.
No wonder your search came up empty.
What did it show on images...Guys taking a break around a break table?  LOl..lol

Google shows brake light even if you misspell the word as break , it still shows images of brake lights. Always click on IMAGES to find things. not just WEB results with text.

How bright do you want it to be? My first LED brake light from super bright LED's was supposed to be specifically intended for motorcycles, it had red LED's shining out but white ones on the bottom. The white ones are intended to light up your license plate. Nifty idea I guess but the problem was that it was dim, unless you were directly behind the bike (I mean looking straight at it at the right angle) you could hardly notice it in the daytime. I then got an 18 high power SMD LED and that did the trick, it's brighter than the original incandescent 1157 bulb yet still draws less power and is clearly noticeable in daytime riding. The only prob is that all the LED's are red so that makes my license plate look pink at night. It's not the brightest 1157 LED that super bright LED sells but it's still plenty bright compared to the incandescent 1157.

Ok, just to update you all.. I went and got the 45 LED bulb... it's freaking bright! It looked really sharp when I hit the "brake"..TYVM..

45 LEDs @ 360 degrees really kicks butt. Just saying.

Here is an option for gauge lighting, I was going to go this way before I put electronic gauges on my bike.

The LED light would base brightness on how many LED's it has, and ho many lumens of light each one puts out.
