'78 CB550 rebuild
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:45:46 AM »
I wasn't intending to do this 'project' honestly. I bought the bike partially restored. It looked good and ran great for about a week. Then it stopped running well and left me stranded in the middle of nowhere in the desert. SO, I started poking around.... the engine is solid but the previous owner had done some really weird stuff to the electrical system.  Now follow the wire has turned into this. I'm pretty much tearing the thing apart and completely re-doing it. I got in far enough, I figured I should just go all the way....

so far:
new stator coil
new field coil
new mini gauges
new fuses, fuse box, casing, wires
new voltage regulator/rectifier
new 8 cell lithium battery
new ignition

I've decided to go ahead and re-locate the electrical and loose the side panels

I'll be getting rid of the 2 brothers exhaust and adding a reverse cone

I pulled the original battery box off and flipped it sideways and it actually fits (with a cut or two) almost perfectly as a casing for the new battery location. Was happy about that. Snip snip, weld weld...

I'll be making a few cuts to frame to clean things up a little.

Once I'm done with all that I've decided to go ahead re-paint and re- stripe the gas tank, front fender (don't know if i'll leave that on or not yet) , and tail. Not sure of the new colors just yet, but I have some ideas. I'm going to leave the brown leather seat as it.

here's a few picks thus far...
(nothing is locked down yet in these pics - obviously...)

Welcome.

If you have some post a couple before shots.

Also, add the year and model to your signature. It will help with asking questions in the future.
