Fork oil drain plug helicoil repair?

I'm doing some front end work on a friend's 750F1, part of which is replacing the fork seals. Well, the PO done wrapped the fork oil drain plug with plumbers tape 'cause the threads in the slider are stripped (and I just CAN NOT wrap my brain around how one could cross thread something so accessible). Am I correct in assuming I can repair this with a helicoil as the copper crush washer does the sealing? Anyone tried this? Results? Of course it's an F and my spare sliders are K...

I just had a heli-coil installed in the drain hole of one the lowers from my XL250s.
The threads were stripped out of the hole.
I haven't re-assembled the fork yet but I don't expect any problems with it.

You might be able to get away with just carefully chasing the threads with a tap.

I wouldn't worry as the torque from the bolt pulls the coil tight. They work for sparkplugs....I wouldn't worry. But....just get a used pan....they are cheap enough on ebay.

Why not just drill and tap a size bigger?

Add fork to your title because some are thinking your talking about the engine oil pan.Looks like you got the FOR but forgot the ending K ;)

Sort answer is yes you can helicoil them without a problem.

Not my bike. I want to leave the guess work out of it in case that bolt goes missing in the future. And that really seems like more work having to find the appropriate length 7mm bolt (or cutting one to size) AND a 7mm copper crush washer.
