CB400F Engine color(?)
« on: May 17, 2006, 06:42:52 PM »
Hola,

I'm a 350F owner, but have always wanted the 400, so looking around and talking to people, i have noticed that some came with the engine finished black.  Was this a certain year? or ?  Also, someone i talked to said that "that's the engine you want".  Any credence to it?  He also said that a '78 might have a frame extension (exhaust holder) so i can us the passenger pegs as rearsets.  Thanks for any info.

JGraham

ps.  Anyone know if kevin is still in business (eagelscall)?

pss.  also, anyone in PDX, OR want to sell a 400F for say.... $100? ;)

Never seen a 400F with a black motor.  If one DOES exist, the owner did it himself.

The later F model 750s had a black motor and they had more power than earlier 750s, (but valve-guide problems).

I'd try and find a good clean 400F with the proper silver/gray engine.

I never liked the 400F, way too "slabby" compared to the very pretty 350F, in my less-than-humble opinion. Good news is that the 400F engine will slip straight into your 350F frame with no mods required, so you'll have the best of both worlds, a very pretty 350F with a little more capacity, a wee bit more power, and a close ratio 6 speed 'box! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It's true that the later models (F2 here in the UK) had a frame extension with the passenger footpegs mounted on them. Before that the poor passenger had to make do with footpegs mounted on the swing arm.

Whether you could use them as rearsets, but of course you'd have to move the controls or move your feet every time you want to change gear or brake (which is quite often if you ride 'em like they're supposed to be... 8) )

Steve they put loops on the rear foot rest before they made the F2 in the UK my bike is/was blue it’s a 76 but it’s on a 77 “S “plate the F2’s are yellow and maroon’ish.

Twas a pretty bike Biffy, I'll find some pics of mine and post them, I bought it for 200 bucks at a swap meet when the Aussie dollar was only 59 cents US, and when I finished restoring it I traded it for my shiny new $5K lathe, plus another 1000 bucks worth of tooling, probably the only time I made a profit out of a bike, boohoo.

It just missed out on going back to Japan, Honda MPE here in Oz were after it because they didn't have one in their museum, the guy I traded it to onsold it to a Mercedes dealer, and now it lives in the lounge room of his house, but he does take it for an occasional ride. A mate had a 350F with the 400F engine in it, and it certainly had the legs on mine, but being a big fat bastard, I need a 750 to cart my 260(+) pounds around, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
