550k tank, no key
« on: November 18, 2011, 05:45:13 AM »
I have a 550k tank with the locking flap but no key for it. Anyone know how to open it? and can I get a new lock barrel/flap with a key from anywhere? Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My bike can be repaired.

Did you try a screw driver? I'm not sure those tank flap locks have actual cylinders in them. I know my 76 750F didn't -- I could just stick any key in there and pop it open.

Any small-ish flat head screwdriver should open it.

Your ignition key works as well. Then you don't have to keep a screw driver in your pocket everytime you pull into a gas station.

My 550 tank does not have a key spot,  What's missing here?

Looks like a different model tank? Mines off a uk spec k3.
Filler cap is recessed, in the centre with a lockable flap over the top that sits flush.

Wedoo,

Your tank is pre-77.  The 77 & 78 tanks have a trap door that covers a recessed cap.  The trap door also has a faux lock on it.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

That requires a special type of key as it is an aftermarket latch.  I had the same thing on one of my 750s...Larry

I wonder why motorcycles ever started having locked tanks.  Gas was certainly not that expensive when my motorcycle was built, and beside, there was not that much capacity anyway.  Of course, if you lost your key for the tank you also lost it for the ignition, but that is not the question.  It was quite a few years before car makers cared to put the tank latch in the car, or locked gas caps became vogue.  Just wondering.
