Of all the warning lights the oil light is really the last one you want to eliminate.  ;)

You are kidding right.? It shows low oil level, which funnily enough, is critical to your engines survival..... :o

I mean I know what it does in my car, wasn't sure if it had another perpous   in my bike. Or I'f there were any alternatives like one of those oil caps with a gauge or something like that. (I also have no clue what those gauges on oils caps do)

The oil light is controlled by the oil pressure switch: when the oil pressure is below the switch's threshold, the light turns on, to warn you of eminent engine damage. It should light up when you turn on the key, and go out once the motor is running.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

the oil light shows pressure is there,,if say your low on oil,,like real low the light might flicker on and off,,also if you have a bad #$%* up like the oil filter housing or drain plug falls out and the oil dumps youll have no pressure then the light comes on,in which case youd have to be quick to notice it and shut down,,leave the oil light or rig up a special cafe one.

I've been meaning to ask... I have a 72 CB500 and the oil light is not functioning. I checked the bulb and it is fine. Assuming the oil level is ok, what are some other culprits for a non-functioning light? The bulb housing/connectors are not the cleanest, but they look about the same as the other three. I can try cleaning the housing/connectors, but I wasn't sure if there are some other common things to check as well.

You could probably get rid of it if you had an oil pressure gauge hooked up, that would be the only way I would care to get rid of mine.

the oil pressure light is not an oil level indicator,it switches the light on if the oil pressure becomes very low or zero, remove the left side engine cover to reveal the oil pump,on the top is the pressure switch, with the key on and the wire to the switch disconnected touch it to earth and the oil lamp should light,if not follow the wire to the gang plug and wiggle it maybe, also follow the wire on the lamp into the headlight bucket and check in there.

Personally I wouldn't use an oil (idiot) light. I'm not sure of it's location on your motor, but if it's in an easy place to get to, replace it with an oil gauge. Then put the gauge where it's easy to see. A light only shows you when you don't have oil pressure where a gauge will tell you how your oil pressure is doing at all times. For me a gauge is the only way to go. And "Sunpro" has one that's backlit for seeing at night.   ...cougar...

Dave... was attempting to follow your advice and instantly ran into some stripped screws. It seems that I do not have a way to get in there. I checked connections in headlight and anywhere else I could, but nothing would flicker the oil light on. Key was in 1st position (engine start). All other lights work as they should. Anything else I can try other than getting someone else to assist ($)? Is it a risky venture to be riding without oil pressure light functioning?

itll be ok to ride, just make sure you do check the oil before you ride, these arent known for sudden oil pressure loss,,plenty of four stroke forced pressure lube dirt bikes and heavy duty ride on mowers and stationary engines  have no oil light or guage.

Thanks Dave. That is what I thought, but I am very new to this. I will get it sorted out whenever I take the bike to someone to do some maintenance for other things.

yeah those phillips(jis)screws can be stubborn alright,if your not confident to remove them leave them be as plan A can become plan B once you start rounding them worse,an impact driver is what you need but if the cross is butchered a small chisel or punch can be used to nudge them in the undo direction.
