Wet starter motor?
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:34:59 PM »
I searched for this, but I couldn't find anything relevant

I was stuck at home today while waiting for my new battery for my car to get replaced under warranty (bosch battery failed in under 10 months, grrr)

since it was unseasonably warm here in Boston I decided to wash my bike for the first time ever

I did have the side covers off, but tried not to aim the hose at the electronics

but somehow in this I think I got the starter wet (yes the starter cover was in place)

right now, I can hit the starter button, hear the solinoid click over, and then maybe get a quick wirr outa the starter motor, but no rotation.

the bike will start with the kickstarter, I started it and let it idle for a while with the starter cover off hoping it would help dry things out, but hours later I still have no starter function

any help or thoughts would be great

a pic of the bike when I first got it

bridge the starter solenoid connections and see if it spins over, the internal contacts might be cruddy.

I also think your problem may be something else other than the wash and starter motor.

"whirring" but no engine crank is the starter clutch not engaging.  Low voltage can cause this.  getting the top of the battery wet will short it out, water conducts.  Keep us posted when it dries out thoroughly.

the bike turns over fine via kick start and still runs nicely

if it not are the solenoid..have bad konneksions.( it gets hot  at terminals.)the starter can have get oil inside,,on komutator ...vash it all in fuel..and polish the komutator with fine sandpaper..blov it klean and dry..and get a new sealing.. all mine honda"s have some oil in starter more /less..a weak point after 30 years use

so, I'm a bit stupid, and battery voltage was 10v, so onto the charger the battery goes, guess in the process of getting it running I killed my battery

if your using a normal meant for a car charger dont leave it on long, itll cook it,if it starts gassing take it off,,you can hook a brake light globe across the battery terminals as its charged to lessen the charge rate.
