so against my better judgment I went back out to the garage... checked spark, chopped plugs, got good spark... put some oil in her, pulled my xr 600 up real nice and close to rob her of her fuel... spark, plus fuel, plus compression equalled 3 kicks and a running motorcycle! I can't figure out the electrics for crap right now but I am so excited I saw a running bike I don't care right now :) I can sleep good tonight, go to the bike show tomorrow and spend some time tomorrow night with all that other crap.

so all you SOHC electrical gurus- just thinking out loud here: if I can kick her over and get her to run... but can't get all the other electrics to work what is the first thing to look at?  bad connections? Alternator? Regulator?

The idiot lights are the only thing coming on. No horn, no headlight/taillight, no e start. well by now I have all the lights and signals off the bike... but they were not functioning last night.

Change all your fuses and check/clean all connections.  Do you have a multimeter?
If not, go buy one. If yes, how many volts at the battery?

on page 1 I posted 12.6 volts at the battery. All new fuses. I am going to take the fuse board off and clean all terminals very well.

Check all the connections in the rubber boot at the left side of the steering head. Most everything you mentioned runs out of the right hand switch down into that boot. I would open up the right handlebar switch and inspect the starter switch.  Most of the 400 fours I have restored have had that switch broken to pieces...Larry

I just installed the right hand controls ( bought on ebay used of course) the original was toast as can be. I have checked all connections at left of the head tube. I am going to have to try and chase each circuit down I think. When my wife gets home to watch the kids I'll grab some coffee and head out to the mancave to put everything pretty much back together and get all grounds, grounded.

yes it was. It does cut power to coils when switched to off. The left side controls will actually light the left and right signal lights on the idiot dash as well. I hate electrical.

Thanks. I have a diagram and actually got tail lights to work lastnight. Going to get  most everything back together hopefully today....see if after getting all grounds tied in and all connections re plugged  maybe the headlights will fire up.

hmm still no headlight horn or turn signals. Tail and brake light work great though. RUns pretty well. Rode it around the backyard today... need a seat real bad now! I have the rusty pan I may salvage but it almost cost as much to get a foam/cover combo as it does a whole new seat! Anyone selling a whole 400f seat?

So the black and red and the black and yellow wires that  go in and out of the headlights fuse area have no power...couldn't figure it out so I plugged the low beam white wire from the headlight into the instrument light hot lead and viola I have my headlight. Still no estart or anything else...but it runs via kickstart and has lights! Dmv tomorrow...new chain and pods in the mail. Should be test riding next week.

Try this, http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring350F.html
The switches in the bottom right lets you turn each circuit on or off, might make it a bit easier to trace.

wow, that is effing awesome!!!!!! I am thinking I am not getting the power that should be going from the ignition switch to the Hi/low headlight switch. Otherwise I would not be getting tail/brake either according to the interactive diagram. I will continue to study this and attempt to troubleshoot. For now I tied the low beam into the speedo/tach light hot lead and it bypasses the headlight circuit.
