The shop by my office now has the CBX listed on CL, reduced to $4250.
Should I go test ride?!

Ask yourself this, would I want a benign 74 CB750 or a 79 CBX when both are priced at $4250!!
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I just sent an email to call me on the CBX. If it's stock and in nice shape it's a steal.

Yes it is!

Now let's see what's wrong about it. If it's not stock then I pass.

I'll go look at it today.  I don't know them like you guys, there are no fairings on it. Were they optional or just taken off?
It's at a small shop and owned by a woman if not mistaken. I've always noted that their prices always were very high, but lately they been advertising reduced pricing (can't sell).

Steve,

1979/1980 did not have fairings. You know what to look at. Take pictures if you can. Color was red or silver. 1980 was black.

Mileage
Over all condition
Tires
Gas tank
Body damage ie: dents, cracks. Rear tail piece was cracked on a lot of them from pushing.
Leaks

I'll call them today and request pictures also. Thank you.

Or not perfect and cost huge money to fix

OK, just got off the phone. Pictures later.

Pretty much had to pry information out of the guy. 40K on the clock. Original owner since 1981. Coast bike so he told me the engine needs pulled and refurbished. That's a lot of work right there huh Jag?

Frame clean, few nicks and bruises. Does not have stock exhaust.

Will see. I have a line on another one from the guy I bought my 82 from. Might go that route.

Steve- Told him you might be stopping by to be my set of eyes. I'm thinking it's going to be rough at that price. Mileage a little high for me.

I say it's a mess! Add to that a broken one year only speedometer. Try buying one of those.  ::) $400.00 easy. Tack looks broke. Engine guards were chrome. Everything dirty or faded.

I'll offer $2500 for it and that's a stretch.

Steve, if I catch you in time don't bother.

These price quote debates never really get to far.
As a whole more people I find on enthusiasts forums are cheap.
I know for sure that I am...

I could see "someone" paying the $4k price or admission and being happy that they did.
At that price and doing all the work yourself there really isnt much meat on the bone, so unless you really want to say you did the work the better option is to buy a $7-10k bike.
And thats before figuring out why the seller thinks the motor needs to be done.

But since this is always fun, here is my thoughts.

-Speedo as stated
-None OEM petcock, sign of ghetto fixing to me.  I think it is a pingle....gotta love when harley guys play with hondas.
-general corrosion.  I also assume that rubber is dried out and things that move dont.
-drilled air caps on the forks?
-Super worried about that rust on the tank.  Hope its not a hole.
-cheap aftermarket shocks
-looks like prolink handle bars

normally I see all barn finds as a grand away from the road.
That normally covers tires, brakes, lines, clutch and other stuff that a bike needs to be road worthy.
But this is a CBX, so it needs that basic grand plus another grand for the carbs!

Again the motor is an unknown, but its $2-3k from the road....easy

I believe the turn indicators are where the yellow plugs are.

Yes, CBX's are expensive. OEM limited, aftermarket high. $130.00 just in seals and valve cover gasket, $1200 in carburetors (they need polished out) $200 for new oil lines (you know their shot), I have seen speedometers go for $700, tack needle busted, $200-$300 in ceramic coating, engine paint, faded plastic, $200 plus in new seals (as you mentioned), $150 in master cylinder rebuild and caliper seals,  progressive fork springs, chain, more than likely sprockets and a tank? Good luck.

Did we forget clutch, alternator work and yes...motor. Now that I think about it "no thanks".  ;D

Thanks for the reply Jag. Not your first rodeo huh?  ;)

I stopped by, it is def a "no thanks".  I have never need such corrosion on an alum motor.  They have it on consignment, the owner lives in Corpus Christi, on the coast. And it was a daily driver and looks like it sat outside 24/7.  Broken tach and speedo needles, WTF?? Good eye Jag, Pingle petcock with online filter, you know what that means.  I didn't bother to look in the tank. Surprising, the tack paint looked good. Tail was cracked.  Exhaust good. Motor started right up and sounded good, but had a knock, seemed to come from the clutch area. He said they all do that? I think not.

Oh well, sorry!  Guess we know why priced so cheap.

Hey no prob, my pleasure. On a good note, the K4 they had was very clean but $4250, no thanks.  Was in similar cond to mine and if I would sell mine, I would be happy to get $3500.

What is the clutch mod?

What is the clutch mod?

 Probably the hydraulic upgrade.

Mine works perfect. They clatter a little when cold. After that mine is quiet.
