'75 CB550 broken tachometer housing
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:49:21 PM »
Hi, first time posting here. I just bought a 75 CB550 last weekend. I was replacing the tachometer cable (the inaugural project) and apparently over tightened the screw that holds the tachometer housing (or cap) onto the valve cover. It caused the housing to break off just inside the cap.

Now, the o-ring still stays on by itself. I am wondering if I can JB Weld that thing back together as the gear was not damaged. If not, where might I come across a new tachometer housing?

Don't know about the JB weld, but prowl Ebay like a madman and I'm sure you'll find what you need. There are also guys on this site listing bikes to part out. Look for the "bikes and parts for sale"  part of the forum. Good luck.

I applied metal-to-metal high temp epoxy and let it dry in the vice over night. It seems to be ok. The housing is not supposed to be screwed on very tight (if you do, it will break like mine) so I think it will work unless the vibrations weaken it over time. The main thing I think is the O-ring needs to be in tact to keep oil from leaking out. We'll see I guess.

I agree with CoachDoc. Now is a good time to see if what you did stops the leakage, but a band aid is a band aid. There are enough good parts out there to make this look and work as it should. But! I am very anal on having things as they were made. So it is my fault to be this way.
