History by VIN on a 71?
« on: November 15, 2011, 09:19:32 AM »
Howdy all,
I've been getting the run around. DMV in NC is telling me they can't run the VIN for a 71 I'm thinking about buying without title. I basically want to see if the bike has any old liens on it and also if it's ever been reported stolen. All the online vin services don't do anything pre1981. I've called hwypatrol, local police and SBI with them stating they don't do that and pointing me elsewhere which have all been deadends. Anyone know how I can find out liens and theft reports on a bike this old? Thanks in advance!

It took 5 calls to the police station and a couple transfers. Ended up being one of the same ladies that told me to call elsewhere that ran it!!! On top of an attitude about the VIN not 17digits, she finally ran it....what a PITA.

Imhybb, I was in the same position you are now in a few months ago.  I just got my tag and my title is on the way.  I started a post with all the information you need to get your bike titled.  Linked below.  What part of NC are you in?

Hello Artf0rm! I did read your post thanks. Looks like I might have to take that route as well. Finally got someone at DMV to run it and they said no liens as nothing showed up. Were you able to ride the bike until you get your title? I'm in Apex, how about you?

I'm in Raleigh.  You'll be able to ride the bike after the step where you take all your forms to the DMV.  State Farm will write you a bond if you need one (that's who I used).  The pain in the a$$ part is getting the inspector out to the house to do the inspection.  Took 3 weeks.  There is a facebook group of ton-up riders in the area you should join.  It's a great source for local help and parts!

Titles are a real PITA here in NC! I bought a Triumph chop off a guy from Florida back in the 70's and he buggered off with a lien still on the title! My mother worked at DMV in Raleigh back then and it was not easy getting the title sorted. In my case I had to send a registered letter to the last known address of the PO and wait a specified length of time for him to reply. Once that was up I got a new title. I have a CB350F donor bike with a locked up motor with no title and I am just gonna use it for spares.
