CB750 Sandie Guys - when did they hit the shores ?
« on: November 04, 2011, 09:12:22 AM »
Having lucked into a sandcast last month after years of searching, I may have stumbled onto another.  Believe it or not.

Haven't been able to get he serial numbers yet - Perhaps it's just another Craigslist Flake, but....

I have been running an add on CL for the better part of 5 years now.   From time to time, I actually get a hit.   Last night a guy contacted me
telling me that his sister has a bike that belonged to here husband, who passed away some time ago.   Tells me that he got it on X-mas eve
in 1968.   Hasn't been on the road in quite a while, but is supposedly intact and dry.  Wants me to make an offer.

Anybody know when the CB's actually were available here in the states ?   It's entirely possible that he has the years mixed up - but who knows.
I was under the impression that they debuted in January of 1969.  So....  x-mas eve of 1968 is somewhat plausible.

Anyone know for sure.

And don't worry guys, as soon as I have some photos and serial numbers, I'll post them up.    Surely lightning can't strike twice.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Won't know till you get there.  Know your numbers and remember, everything a seller or PO says is to be taken lightly, if at all.  Present company excluded.

Believe me - I'm ready to go.  Already have the straps out and got the truck fueled up.

Just waiting on some photos and a return phone call.

June '69 a few bikes hit the streets in LA......................by late August bikes were delivered to nearly every state. By December '69 the sandcasts were all delivered to dealers as diecast production had already started.

Just curious-how often do you update your ad?  My best find so far is a 9/70 production from the original owner.

I usually update my add every month or 6 weeks.  Sometimes I get flagged, so I let it die for a few weeks and try again.

Bad for me - the guy has got it started and is taking it by his local Honda dealership for an appraisal.
Say he thinks it's worth 1000-1500 - I've already told him, probably more and not to let the Honda guys steal it from him.  Hopefully he's read that email before hitting the dealership.

Says the bike only has 5k miles and is pristine.

Starting to think he's pulling my leg.   Who knows.

Get your popcorn ready.

I think the History channel should get a new TV show going instead of the Gold Rush series and call it the Sand Rush series! Then we could see some bikes every Friday night on the tele!!! LOL

Check the CL online chat/help page for reasons people get flagged.  many reasons you may be getting flagged.  Maybe you pissed someone off somewhere along the line?  Maybe it is someone else looking for bikes, and maybe it is completely random.  I flag if I don't like something about an ad, all caps? outrageous pricing? maybe it is too cheap and smells like a scam?  That gets a flag everytime. "flag not, lest ye be flagged"  ;)

Yep its other buyers/pickers that are flagging you.Don't want you to get a good deal ahead of them.Your add will stay up longer in the 'Wanted' section of CL or toss one in the Barter section, think there are people checking that out also.
I also would like an update on this other Sandie quest.

I guess at this point it's obvious that the deal went down like the Hindenburg, but we still deserve an update.

What's up with leaving the story hanging?

Well,  I think it was someone that knows just enough about the mythical sandcast to get me interested.

I never got any photos.   He told me that he and his neighbor started the bike and took it to the local Honda Dealership.

I kept shooting emails to him.    That's when he told me that he sold it to a guy in Wisconsin for 35k and that the buyer, in turn, had a buyer overseas.

I called BS and never got a response.     Amazing how much time some people have on their hands.

Oh well, the search continues.

His story might be believable IF he had posted an ad to sell a "1969 Honda cb750" but that's not what happened, he responded to your ad.  Now why would he contact you at all if he was smart enough to check with a dealer.  His story doesn't fly the guy is a doosh just f_cking with people.  You see these people on the freeway all the time.  Driving in the fast lane in a Prius doing 60mph refusing to change lanes.

I posted an ad for a 1969, CB750 awhile back for about $2400 and was instantly attacked with emails wanting pictures and info.  It was a diecast and the wave of interest disappeared as soon as I added that in the description.  The guy was making it up as he went along, including the dealership story.  When was the last time any dealership worked on a 69 Honda?  Around here it has to be built this decade to get a spot on the shop schedule.
