Oil pump cap
« on: May 06, 2005, 11:21:16 AM »
Evening / Morning folks..
I am eventually tackeling a small oil leak in my 500 K1 (Leak....That's strange for a honda ! :D) Anyway it's comming from the underside of the oil pump cap. The Triangular "Biased" cap with the three countersunk screws. Now I couldn't be arsed draining the oil, I think I can't but I'll ask anyway...Can I remove this cap with the sump full or is there a freeflow into the lower half of the pump (enough to pour out and vex me.?
Paul.

If you are talking about where I believe you are, and it is anything like the 750, you won't want to just let it drain onto the floor.

Nah...500's do not have the oil resovoir tank thingy, so I presume "Oiling" is different, No matter anyway, I've a classic run tomorrow morning so I'm going to put everything back and tackle it another day when I have more time and unforseen issues won't cancel my day. I'll probably give it an oil change at that stage.

So the 550 is not a dry sump, but rather a wet sump?? Hmm, never realized that.

You can happily take off the flat cap as long as you use am impact driver on the screws, the problem is that the square section "o" ring that seals it isnt avaiable as a spare part and the size given in the parts book is wrong!! easiest way is another pump which is also held on by three screws---DIFFERENT ONES-- (plus the pressure switch wire) and as long as the bike is upright you can do that without draining the oil. If you have a Hydraulic seal specialist local he MAY be able to make you up an "O" ring if he is interested enough and has time. WWW.davidsilverspares.co.uk did have NOS complete pumps last year at £60 plus shipping (about $110)
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

What the AFAIK does AFAIK mean...?
All I need is AFAIK'en  O_Ring. Went on my run yesterday, after changing the pressure switch. Wait for it.....Either the old one didn't tell me the Oil pump was not "Functional" or the new one has F***d my day. The oil light came on mid run, couldn't take the chance so I left and came home. Plenty of oil, need to lift the tappet covers to see and hopefully its just a faulty switch and not the oil pump.
Meanwhile, will bring the pump O-ring to Mr Seal Inc and get a replacement one.
More wine, bed, tomorrow's another day.
