President Obama visits Darwin today
« on: November 16, 2011, 03:39:17 PM »
It's only a quick visit and part of the city is in full lockdown.
Residents will have to show proof of ID and also be escorted by the police.
In my 30 years here, I have never seen anything like this, but that is the world that we live in.

President Obama will lay a wreath at the memorial for USS Peary which went down in Darwin Harbour in 1942 during the Japanese bombing here.
He then travels to the RAAF Base (just around the corner from work here) to address the ADF troops and also to announce details of the US Military build up here.

I might be able to see Airforce 1 coming into land but that is about as close as I'll get to the President.  8)

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Get a shot of your bike with Airforce 1 coming in to land in the background.  Cool shot for the "SOHC4 on the road thread".

That would be a once in a lifetime shot mate.  8)

There is a huge exclusion zone right around the flight path of Airforce 1 and also for the Presidential Limo that was flown here aboard a C-17 Globemaster.

There are police and US Secret Service guys swarming the whole area and there will be US Marine Corps Black Hawk Choppers and Aust Airforce Jets up above during the visit.

Just another day at the office for those guys.  ;D

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

If you observe carefully, another 747 will take off sometime prior to AF1 leaving. This is the Doomsday 747 which shadows AF1. It is a mobile White House with the finest communications capabilities that tax money can buy. Yes, he can launch a nuke strike from there.

Pre 9/11 I was able to shake Richard Nixon's hand and have a brief chat with Bill Clinton outside his home. Nixon was a bloodless looking midget. Clinton is surprisingly tall.  Now I imagine rather than have 2 Secret Service dudes a few feet away, I would have laser beams all over me.

During the last election, John McCain caused a total traffic jam in Sedona when he decided he wanted to visit McDonald's drive-through. ???

The American Secret Service guys have held a briefing with the members of the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre at the Royal Darwin Hospital in the event of the President being shot.

These are the people who responded to the needs of the victims of the Bali bombings and also President Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor when an assasination attempt was made on his life in 2008.

They are very highly trained and skilled people who know best how to deal with these types of situations if they arise although I believe that anything like that to occur here is highly unlikely.

Clinton used to like to visit his local Starbucks. His minders would enter the store, and block the door. He would stroll in and his other minders would block the entrance.  Poor patrons would watch the train they were hoping to catch come and go.

His motorcade would run at 50 mph and force all the cars off the road so his car did not have to slow down. Now that he is "former" they can;t do that anymore. At Starbucks he waits in line with everyone else. He only has two minders.

I did call him Mr. President which he loved.  I could have call him the guy who likes ugly women. At least JFK did not disgrace the office, his babes were top shelf.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hate to have you and your bike taken out by a hellfire missile.  ;)

Probably the first time a sitting U.S. President has visited Darwin?

Well ...even crocs have standards. ;D

We have a similar memorial in St Paul.  Similar type of gun but off the USS Ward a Wickes class destroyer very similar to the Peary a Clemson class.  Both old WW1 style four stackers.  The gun off the Ward is the one that fired the first shot at Pearl Harbour sinking a midget sub a few hours before the air attack.  The gun crew were members of the Minnesota Naval Reserve.

Even better the landmark with SOHC thread.

I saw AF! a couple times landing at Luke AFB, in Goodyear or Litchfield Park, or whatever - PHX, AZ.
