neighbor has a 75 750a with about 22k miles on it. hasnot run for about 10 years and he says the engine is "locked up". should i avoid this one like a bad penny or offer him how much?
thanks..not too familiar with this model.
I just unfroze a 1972 cb750 engine and let me tell you, it's a relief when she comes free but until then you just kick yourself "dang I shouldnt have bought it" while you're dousing the cylinders with a 50/50 combo of acetone and automatic transmission fluid (atf). You will find yourself rocking the alternator bolt, and putting the bike in 5th gear and rocking the bike back and forth, maybe jamming the kickstarter now and then to jolt it.
Tell him the truth. "This think could be a boat anchor. I'll give you $50." If he says 'no' then walk away.
Because right now, although we project oriented enthusiasts used to have a market for used parts, unless you are off loading parts for a real high-demand bike like a sandcast or a z1 or a H2 Kawasaki, the economy has snuffed out the general public's ability to spend on their hobbies.
I watch ebay for stuff and the things I can buy now are so dang cheap and not even an auction usually a 'buy it now' .
Point being if your 'Plan B' with the 750a is 'part it out if I can't free up the motor' -- look at the 'completed listings' on ebay for that bike FIRST, before you buy. That's why I say offer $50.
Its just tough times. You might get the 750a freed up and riding but if not, is there any demand for its parts, I don't know.
