Ever ridden on a track?
« on: December 25, 2005, 05:43:43 AM »
I may have a chance at having an all-vintage session at a race track this summer.  This is something I did in 2005 and will try to do again in 2006.

In 2005 I had no trouble filling up a group with nothing but old bikes.  It was successful enough that I might arrange two of these for 2006.

Both events will be somewhere within 150 miles of lower Lake Michigan.  Are there any people on this list that would be interested?  Low stress, old bikes, and no 19 year olds on 600 supersports trying to run you over.  It's a lot of fun.

Big Bob, Vintage only!!  I'd love to do it.  I'm from Kansas City, but we always get to Chicago for a few days every summer.

Big Bob, Vintage only!!

I should mention that "Vintage" has a slightly flexible definition for this thing.  Last year we had one guy on a late model GS 500 with a GSXR front end and aftermarket bodywork.  BUt he's a foremr racer and would be faster than any of us even if he brought out on of his old bikes.

There was another guy on an 851 Ducati.  Not exactly vintage but pretty damn neat.

There were also CB 550's, two CB 750's, two CB 400's, and a CB 650.  And a bunch of other old stuff.  Assorted jap bikes, atleast one Guzzi that I can recall, some two strokes.

Everyone had a really good time.  Pics at

If I've got extra space for the event I'll be sure to spread the word here.

I need to emphasize that this is NOT RACING.  While this event is held at a race track it is not a race.  This is a day for improving skills and working on your cornering abilities.  Instruction at a variety of levels is available to those interested.

This is a great chance to run your bike on a track without worrying about getting run over by some kid on a GSXR 1000.  There will be primarily old bikes in our section ridden by people of skill levels ranging from novice to expert.  Bike prep is minimal - no oil leaks, new tires, tape up glass and disconnect lights.

It's also cheap.  $125 for the day.  That might sound like a lot of money but anyone that's done any kind of track time can tell you it's a good deal.  And it's tough to beat from a fun per dollar perspective.

I can't make it  :'(

I think vintage bikes should "lift a little skirt."

The "Motor" of a "Motorbike" should show it's Badass Self a little and not let the color of the paint define who made it. IMHO

The day went very well.  The vintage group had one rider take a slide off the track, he's fine and he was thinking about repainting that thing anyway.

Great weather for it.  Partly cloudy, temps in the mid to upper 70's.  We had more fun than you can imagine.

More photos will be added to that album later.

You'll need to hunt for the old bikes.

SOHC's on the track -

Very nice! I wish I could have made it with my CB750K2.  Bummer!  I was there for a NESBA day about four weeks ago... had a hard time with turn 6 for quite a while, but eventually got some good instruction on how to take that corner.

Glad to hear the weather held out for all of you!

I ride at the local track days..My avatar is taken from one of them.

We have three classes for riders.

A) Overtaking allowed anywhere including on the inside of corners.

B) Overtaking on straights and on the outside of corners.

C) Overtaking on straights only.

I only ride in C and B class so I don't get a rider dropping his bike on my inside on a corner and knocking me off. I bought my bike to ride and to enjoy.....TC

That's what's nice about these track days that I put together.  Almost all the riders in my session know each other and behave themselves accordingly - people tend to show a little more respect when they know they might be called out at the bar the next week.

Rules for passing allow passes on the inside but all passes must have a 6 foot safety margin.  There's one part of the track that's a little dicey for passes, no passing is allowed there at all.

It's easier to have a good time when you don't have to worry about some 19 year old on a GSXR1000 going by you like he was shot out of a cannon.
