Soon my brother will be hauling my 750 k6 back to Austin for me. Had to abort my trip and bike in Charlotte. I first posted about this here.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=96488.msg1075703#msg1075703
The engine has 38000 on it and seems to run fine other than the noisy cam chain when cold. The gearbox makes a repetitive "chong" sound in gear. Whatever is hitting has enough time to reverberate before it hits again.

I bought a k3 engine of unknown mileage and condition.
What's the better engine (all else being equal)? Should I do the K3 or hold off and redo the K6? I don't plan on making any structural changes. Been reading Hondmans book, the manual, and these forums. Usedta rebuild VW engines so I know I can do this.
Thoughts?

I would be curious what was wrong in the K6 and tear it down for a look.  You could get the K3 running and see if it is a keeper.  Seems to be the shortest route from A to B if the K3 is solid.  If not, make one good engine out of the two with a set of rings and a gasket set.  Once you are into the two teardowns, if it comes to that, it will go quickly.
