why are my '72 cb750 emulsion tubes sticking out?
« on: November 19, 2011, 10:14:14 AM »
I didn't notice it when I disassembled my '72 cb750 carbs to clean them but my 4 emulsion tubes don't screw in as deep as I'd like.  This is the 2nd set of cb750 carbs I've cleaned, the first set was from my 1971 cb750 and I don't remember this coming up on that bike.

So I thought it was a burr or something in the #1 carb's emulsion tube 'tunnel' but I checked all of them -- they all thread in *exactly* the same depth and leave threads exposed, and I see no bad threads on any of the 4 emulsion tubes nor on their threaded shaft's threads.

Is this normal or what

Looks like the set I assembled last week. I don't think they bottom out into the carb. Cliff.

Thanks Cliff, I looked carefully at the threads on the emulsion tube before putting it in the carb and there is a distinct 'color line' on the brass threads where the bottom is dulled and the top part is newer-looking.

Then looked into the socket in the carb that the emulsion tube screws into -- the first half of the threads clearly look more 'used' then the bottom-most threads.

I found that on all 4 carbs.  Gott dang weird man.   Good ole meticulous Honda getting it wrong on the early cb750 emulsion tube length.

I like those early CB750 carbs SO much better than the later ones;I don't blame you for wanting to dial them in exactly as they should be. Nice Carbs !

Don't overtighten them as you can crack the alloy body of the carb or as some have pictured bend them to useless junk.

Thanks for the photos budlite, I started to get after these emulsion tubes just imagining some leftover crud in the threads that would give way if only I torqued my wrench a bit harder, now I see I'm not the only one who thinks 'all the threads must go in there'

Yep, and the reason they don't go all the way in is because they bottom out on the needle jet.
I discovered that looking at a set of partially assembled carbs that I'd robbed the needle jets from.
