Valve Clearance Rocker Arm Play
« on: December 08, 2011, 03:01:19 PM »
Hi,

I'm adjusting the valve clearance on my 550 for the first time. The rocker arms seem to have some play (some more than others). The question is: should the clearance be set when the rocker arm is held closest to the piston or when it is held farthest from the piston?

Does that make sense?

Ha. On a second look, I was an idiot (go figure). When you tighten it down, you lose the vertical play...DUH!

Hopefully you are reading the manual about this procedure, yes?

Yep, I'm following Clymer. I think I got it done correctly. When I come back from vacation I'm going to check them all again to make sure I did it right. However, it was a real PITA to get those feeler gauges in there and to tighten the locking nut without moving the screw.

I have a pass-through socket set which worked really well I think. I would put it over the nut and then put a screwdriver through the middle and hold the screw while locking the nut.
