Modified oil cooler for an oil bag ??
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:40:56 PM »
Hi Everyone,

This would be to mount in the rear part of the frame - with the idea of "opening up the triangle" for that cafe look - it may even double just a little as a rear fender. it would be hidden to some degree from a profile view and would also be functional...

I am thinking about taking a long narrow oil cooler such as this :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Earls-Performance-Temp-A-Cure-Fluid-Cooler-21006ERL-/370556997739?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BUA%252BFICS%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D280770114051%26ps%3D54#ht_1578wt_804

or here:

then cutting away the bottom half of the "cooler part" and simply welding/  sandwiching the newly hollowed out area with with 2 aluminum plates to make a reservoir that would be the actual tank.

Does any on foresee any issues?  Assuming the volume is enough (about 3 quarts?)  The top half would still function as a cooler… I haven't found the exact cooler this just an idea at this point...

Thanks in advance,
M

Well a cooler should have access to plenty of cool air flow mate, so it's not something that you'd want to place behind a hot engine, and you definitely don't want to use it as a fender, rocks would damage it and make it leak, and mud would block the cooling fins, and thus, the air flow. The best place for an oil cooler is on the front of your bike.

I guess you could build an oil tank, plenty of folk have already, I always thought it'd be nice to have one incorporated in the "seat hump" of a race bike, and I bet there are plenty of folk around with the skills to fab one up for you. The only problem might be that if not well insulated, you might burn your butt. You could build an oil tank incorporated into an alloy race tank, (as was used in some early US and British bikes) but I don't know if having a tank full of hot oil in close proximity to a tank full of cool fuel and some rather sensitive body parts would be a real good idea. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I always thought the Vincent idea of box section top frame was pretty cool.
 Lots of surface area.
Couple of Japanese bikes have used frame for oil tank (Suzuki and Yamaha)
Rickman did a CB750 race frame but it real difficult to get oil warmed up as there was just too much surface area I've only ever seen one, friend had it but fitted conventional tank after an engine blow up, (impossible to clean internals)
I fake being smart pretty good
'you can take my word for it or argue until you find out I'm right'
