Why would someone do this? Fuse Box Modification.
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:41:33 PM »
Hey guys.  I'm working on the electrical of my 1978 CB750K.  The wiring is not in terrible shape, but the headlight didn't work, so I'm just going through to see if I can find the issue.  Anyway, I stumbled on this modification on the fuse box.  As you can see in the picture, there is a wire connecting the 5A (taillight) and 7A (headlight) fuses.

So, my questions are:  Why would someone do this and if the fuses were not burnt out, would this modification prevent my headlights from working?

Thanks,

Nik

Someone would do this as a stop-gap method to get the bike to run/headlight work. The fix for this is to replace that overheated/fried 3 piece fuseholder with either Hondaman's new 3 piece fuseholder or go to auto supply place and buy 3 x 30A rated blade fuseholders with pigtails and solder them to the appropriate wires ( snipped off the back of the old fuseholder ). While your at the store get some 15A( Main ) , 7A (headlight ) and 5A ( Taillight )blade fuses..( don't even think about leaving the 30A ones in there ! )... believe me you need to get rid of that fuseholder now, if you want a reliable bike, that is  ;)

Thanks Spanner.  The bike is in full tear down mode as I'm rebuilding it, so I'll definitely take your advice and do something about this fuse holder while I'm at it.  Although, the bike did run ok before I tore it down.  The only electrical issue was that the headlight did not work.

Spanner,

A question ... The 750K1 appears to have one fuse compared to later K's .. is that correct?

Yep, one fuse-does-all on the K1.... you could modify the wiring to have a h/l and taillight fuse, but a bit of a rigmarole  :D... Hey, there's no starter safety either :o... bike will turn the starter while in gear ! oh, and one wire swap under the sidecover will give you full ignition, lights etc..... no key required  :o :o
