What Dave is saying (I'll translate from Australian) is you have to first remove the bearing retainer, which is reverse threaded. It requires some sort of home made tool to remove it, since the Honda special tool is no longer available- search this site and there are several threads about such tools. Once the bearing retainer is removed it's simple to push out the cush rubbers from the inside. Note also that there are "stakes" punched into the metal of the threads that have to be drilled out lightly in order to unscrew the reverse threaded retainer.

Here's a link to the simple tool I made to do this, and how to use it: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=97342.0

doesnt the sprocket carrier just push into the hub like most bikes?

I thought there would be the the tangs on the sprocket carrier and the rubber bumpers on the inside and just pushed together.

not that way?

thanks

Classic Honda over- engineering, Charlie, but the sprocket carrier on the 550 is indeed held in place by the threaded bearing retainer. Don't forget about drilling the staking first and the left handed threads, which is the opposite of the threading on the front hub.

that flange nut must be removed,it undoes clockwise.

its easier and causes less damage if you have a tool like these.

i pinched a photo here from terry in australia.

you might try with a punch to knock it in the clockwise undo direction,it might be loose enough to come easy, you might find it has been staked with a prick punch or chisel inside those holes, youll have to drill that slightly,,ive had them come undone easy without unstaking, spray some wd40 or similar into those threads they are very fine.
