Wow, who woulda thought that. Sounds like a future episode of Forensic Files... just have whoever needs to "disappear" help you do some welding.

This is why most auto-part stores sell non-chlorinated brake cleaner. It isn't quite a strong as the "regular stuff", but won't produce phosgene.

Vintage Brake recommends using MEK, denatured alcohol or acetone to clean brake parts as any aerosol will leave a residue that will form a boundary layer that will affect proper braking.

Wow, that was probably the most important article I have read in awhile.

That's a great reminder of how toxic some of these everyday chemicals are. I think we all tend to get lazy and not pay enough attention to the labels.

Thanks for posting that.

Thank you for that post.  I have brake cleaner and a MIG welder in the shop and only by grace have the two never met.

Not cycle related , but repairing an airconditioner system that has freon residue will expose you to the same threat.

MEK and Acetone are 2 horrible chemicals as well. I do alot of cleaning with orange degreaser and 99% isoplropyl alcahol.

good gawd thanks for posting that.  I have brake cleaner but I don't do welding however I have used acetone with auto transmission fluid to lube a stuck motor or two.

I feel sorry for the author he is in real trouble and doesn't deserve to be.

WOW, that's scary.  you know, it's always in the back of my mind "hey maybe i should read these labels before mixing X with Y..." but I never really do.

I think an easy solution to this is to store all of your aerosols in the bathroom.  the labels will definitely get read lol !!

That is very scary.  Chemicals are no joke, and can have repurcussions that we don't immediately notice too.  Some of the cans you spray can shut down your testes for good.  Pills we take (ibuprofen and acetaminaphen) can dissolve your stomach lining and allow the acid to dissolve your stomach wall after long exposure (I know this for a fact after seeing over half my blood exit my mouth).  I think it is a shame and borderline criminal that warning labels do not go into real detail of what the included chemicals can do to your body, so just be careful, read between the lines, and research whatever you are doing well before you do it.

I really feel bad for that guy.  He took what would be considered strong precautions, and he still lost capability in his body.  Truly sad.

My rule of thumb has been, the faster it evaporates the worse it is. With water being the standard. MEK and ACETONE are still pretty bad.

Brake Cleaner and Electric motor cleaner are the worst I've come across. i don't have to read a label to tell me this is bad stuff.  Shield yourself, use it outside, watch for overspray, etc.

Phosgene - was used in WW1 by the Germans as one of the 3 types (if I remember right) of gas shells lobbed at the othe rside on the Western Front.
