What Was Your 1st CB750?
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:51:55 PM »
We all have stories about our 1st kiss, or our 1st motorcycle. How about your 1st CB750? When I got this puppy back in 1998 on an impulse buy from a local ad in the paper, I didn't know or care anything about CB750's. Now I can't imagine life without one (or 2, or 3 sometimes). I have to admit I had beginners luck with this one (yup, its an early sandcast). It was also the fastest one I ever had; it would pull 125 mph on level ground, no bs. Its no longer in my garage (no regrets, (sorta) I can't complain) but I don't think I'll ever have a nicer one than this ever again.

My first CB750 was purchased from a cowgirl in San Antonio for $300! Unfortunately, it's still in project form as I have bought 3 other CB's since then and this keeps getting pushed to the back burner. I threw the seat away the first day!

I miss my first K1 a little for its power and those great HM300 pipes, but my K2 I had to trade to a few months later has been the love of my life, since.

Bone stock, Gold 72 back in 89. It was my first bike ever. "Bought" it from a friend but could never get the rest of the cash together so had to give it back after a month. Was also the recipient of my first "mechanic" mistake. Did the old "hay this is real hard to get these carbs out!" so I hack sawed the boots off..... DOUGH!!!!! :o  Typical teenager problem solving. Learned my lesson for sure!  :P

Well I was a little late getting into the 750 world :( I had all kinds of Honda's growing up in the 70's but  never a 750 for some reason . Always regretted that  a little bit??? Years and years went by, marriage, kids, work and motorcycles weren't even in my thoughts let alone a 35 year old Honda, but in 2009 I got a auction sale advertisement in the mail and one of the items listed was a Honda CB750. The bike was near by so I went take take a look at it. I've been addicted ever since. I didn't get that bike but this is the one I got several months later and still have it,
1976 CB750K6  I only wish I had bought one of these machine new off the show room floor in the 70's and held on to it all these years and been the one and only owner. There are a few members here that are the original owners of there bikes, way to go guys ;D What's the old saying- should of, could of, would of ::)

When Norton brought out their Commando I thought it was the best looking motorcycle ever. I took a mechanics course and eventually started work in a Honda shop. Came to my senses and bought my CB750 in 73. Best move I ever made, still the only street bike I have ever owned.

I still think the Norton is a great looking motorcycle. I also believe Honda knew who their competition was in the marketplace. The CB750 engine canted forward is a hot combination all these years later.

Bought my first 750 in 1981 a K6. Later put in an RC836 kit with Andrews cam etc. Friend and fellow 750 riding buddy totaled out the bike around 2000,and himself a little bit but luckily the engine still lives on in another frame,a Flake Orange K4.

Bought my K1 new from the dealership where I worked. A couple of years later sold my K1 to a friend and bought a K3 from that same dealership that I was still at. Sold the K3 a couple of years later to pay bills from my divorce. But after that got my life on track,  married a beautiful woman who I am still with, bought a thriving business and bought lots of Hondas everything from CR250s to a CBX. Kids came along and got rid of all those toys. I was out of the motorcycle scene for many, many years but continued to dream about them. About 12 years ago I had a chance to buy my old K1 back from the same friend I sold it to years ago. Of course it had sat in his barn for years uncovered so I didn't have to spend a huge amount for it. Bought it, repaired it and gets ridden every day the weather cooperates. I will not let it go again.

I first 750 was a 1973 K-2. Bought in February and headed to California with my wife to see her sister in May. I have had it all over the US and it has never given me any trouble. I still have it.

First CB750 (K6) was bought in 1992 in NY state - when I test rode it I came back with a huge smile on my face and gladly paid the $800 asking price. The bike would take me on my first long distance trip across country and back (7000 miles, 3 weeks) before heading home to the UK (I was only in the states for the summer). I still regret selling it to a dealer in Columbia, Missouri  :-\

Here it is in Monument Valley, Utah

When I got back to Scotland I bought my second CB750 (an F2).

cheers
Andy

My first CB750 was the one I bought new in July of 1969, must have been a sandcast. It died a violent death in August 1969 when a young lady in a Cortina blew through a stop sign and I T-boned her in the driver's door. I woke up with a fireman bandaging my head and then off Code 3 to the hospital. It took me 2 years to get another one, a K1 bought new, which I still have.

A brand new 1978 CB750 Supersport F2.  Purchased from Anderson Sales in Bloomfield Hills, MI for $2499.80.  I still have the paperwork.  Sold my 77 H-D Superglide and still had a grand left over.  2nd CB750 was a lot cheaper.  $150.00 from a guy who was leaving town in a hurry.  Bike was chained to a clothes pole in a backyard next to a drug dealers house.  :o  Still have this one.

About 10 years ago I was standing in line at the local bike parts counter and a guy walks in with a flyer in his hand.  Monkey, the parts guy, asked him what it was for.  He said he had terminal cancer and was giving away 3 old bikes to someone that would use them.  I said I would do that.  We met at a storage unit and when he opened the door I saw a CB450 Chopper with springer frontend, an early 69 Kawasaki and a 76 CB750.  He said the 750 had an 836 kit in it and was used for drag racing.  I took them all, fixed up the 750 (836) into a cafe bike.  It had the biggest aluminum rear sprocket I have ever seen on it.  It was my start in custom bike work and no coincidence.  It was exactly what I needed at that time in my life.  I don't kow when, or if, the old guy passed on, but we will all face that day.  Some sooner than later.
36 years of this stuff, here to help.

I have a hobby of buying old cheap non-running bikes and getting them going.   Much better than my old hobby of drinking lots of beer.

So I buy anything, a 1966 Suzuki 250 for example, old 70s dirt bikes, 2 strokes everything, if its cheap and not running I started buying and getting them running 3 years or so ago.

So I'm looking on Craigslist for my next project, I set the 'max' field on the Craigslist search page to $1000 and hit 'search,' in March 2010, up comes an $800 cb750 from 1970 not running out of Santa Cruz.  I call the guy he has a guy from LA wants to buy it but the Santa Cruz seller told me "I don't feel like waiting to find out if this guy really will drive up from LA, if you have cash come on over."

I looked at the bike, it was the very first cb750 I had ever looked at to buy as a project, here she is

I looked at it, I thought "man this is the first time I have ever thought to revive a cb750 unchartered territory for me, and who knows if this thing will ever run, I better talk him down" he said "I think $800 is a fair price, it has a custom 4-into-2 and isn't in bad shape."

It was one of those long stretches of not being able to find a cheap project I was hungry I said "okay" on the drive home I got buyers remorse.

Then I found out it was a 1969 not a 1970 and found out it was a sandcast.
So I call that dumb luck theres a Tom Petty song "even the losers get lucky sometime"

Since then I've had a couple other 750s and enjoy the crap out of this man.  They are old and atypical like the Hondawggie.
