Modifying steering stops
« on: May 19, 2006, 06:26:29 AM »
I mounted clip-ons on my 77 CB750 F1 and they just hit the tank about 1/4 inch before hitting the steering stop.  Does anyone have a method of extending the steering stops?

This is what I did:

There is also another thread where I posted a pic on it, but I can't remember where it is. Just perform a search and you come up with a couple options.

Easiest way I've seen -- Take smallest hose clamps (worm-gear) you can find and put one on each stop with the thick part (part with screw) towards the center to make the bars stop earlier.  I'll try to find a photo.

Also heard that some have had success with drilling/tapping and installing screws to elongate the stop. If you search you should find a thread discussing it.

I went the easy route and used the JB Weld putty (the thicker stuff you cut off a roll) to build up my stops about a 1/4 inch.  It all works about the same.

If you have access to a welder, or a friend with one, you could build up the steering stops with weld, or weld on small bits of steel.  Then file down so it looks seemless & spot paint.

why don't you just rotate the clipon mount so that when fully locked the bars don't hit the tank.  Thats what I did and I think some others have too.

I've used this method on my bikes and find it works great......now the stops are adjustable.

Even drilled and tapped the stop with the bike together......didint need to remove the triple tree.

I'll see if I can find some detail photos of my stops.

Later,
