It's Alive!!!
« on: November 18, 2011, 01:57:49 PM »
After sourcing parts, and waiting around for some time, I got the old Hondamatic up and running again.  As I previously posted http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=92426.0 I had an oiling issue.  I never did see anything definitive as to why the oil was not reaching the cam, but obviously there had been a restriction.

I ended up pulling the top end off the bike (in the frame!) meticulously cleaning and inspecting everything.  As I reassembled the engine, I would crank it over to check for oil flow.  Installed the cylinders, then spin it over.  Installed the head, then spin it over.  Same with the cam holders, then the cam. then the rockers.  I made damn sure the oil was going where it should before I ever fired it to life.  Was somewhat messy doing it this way, but things clean up.

After all was said and done, I took it out and rode it 26 miles in windy mid 40 temps  (makes me really appreciate my GL1800) to make sure it was going to live.  Got back home and everything was good, so it appears that I got it this time.

FYI, I ended up going back with a stock CB750A camshaft.  My 26 y/o son is going to use the 'matic as his first motorcycle next year, so I decided to keep things mild for now.
