SHOCKS! Hagon or Ikon, help me decide
« on: November 23, 2011, 11:07:13 AM »
So after hours of research and searching the forums for information and opinions I have narrowed down my search to just two pairs of shocks that meet my needs. Hoping to get some input from people that have experience with either of these shocks to help me with my final decision. These will be going on my 750 and used for solo spirited street / canyon carving. No track racing. They both seem like great shocks, I just would like to hear what others have to say.

Ikons, for the rebuildability.

I just got the Hagons, put them on in the fall and did only one ride. I got the ones with a chrome cover on top, look close to original. So I can't tell you much, other than they fit perfectly, no mods needs, and felt great, if not a bit stiff. But a thousand times better then the worn out pogo-stick Honda's that were on there.

I got the basic Hagons and they work great, never even bothered to adjust them as they're so much better than oem.

If Ikon service is still as good as KONI's used to be, Ikon. Never understood why they changed the name.

Progressive currently has a sale on, buy a set of 940 or 440 rears and get a set of front springs free.  There's a variety of offerings for standard and lowered ride heights.  I just caught wind of this offer from Twitter yesterday..

http://www.cyrilhuzeblog.com/2011/11/23/free-fork-springs-with-purchase-of-a-set-of-touring-rear-shocks/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+cyrilhuzeblog+%28Cyril+Huze+Post%29

Wish I had the bucks - oh well, I hope this helps someone.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I purchased a pair of Basic Hagon rear shocks & now that I have the correct rear spring rate(I have a very good shock dealer in CT.)I feel that these are excellent rear shocks and do enjoy the all-around balance of comfort & sport riding that I use them for...Very comfortable.

I'm still looking for a set of vintage Koni's that won't break my bank.  If I had the dough to buy new, I'd go Ikon for sure!

I got a set of the IKON's recently.  Easy to install and very happy with them.  I picked them because they were rebuildable.

I'd go for the Hagons- they are great quality and performance shocks, and the way they will swap springs to suit you is very helpful.

Also it leaves you an extra $75 to spend enjoying them.

Yeah I saw those prices after I responded. Many more options than when I bought mine 5 years ago ( mine are not adjustable so I better not gain weight) but they were about $250.

I am surprised that the Progressive offer is no big deal to anyone..  I have a pair of their front springs in a 900C and the guys on the DOHC site swear by them, not at them..  The only post about Progressive shocks here was pretty negative.  How can someone do well on fronts and poorly on the rears is beyond me.

Also, I notice no one has mentioned the CycleX shocks.  Obviously they are not high-end but a few mentions of them on posts I have seen didn't trash them.

I suppose it depends on how hard you ride and what you actually know about good suspension. It is a lot easier to make a rated front spring than it is to make a complete rear shock, completely different and no comparison. From my observations here i find that most people have not much of an idea about the proper function of any suspension part, and don't really push their bikes at all, so most comments aren't all that helpful. I have never seen progressive rear shocks on a race bike here in Australia so that says something, seen lots with Ikon {Koni} and a few with Hagon though.... ;)

Those steel black bodied Ikons are probably what I will go with. I would like the alloy bodied shocks but the extra $150 doesnt seem worth it. Plus they dont have black bodies.

I've used the NJP Racing shocks, Progressive shocks and Ikons on my 500/550 Hondas. The Ikons are by far superior. They give a controlled supple ride and the rebound dampening adjustment allows fine tuning for the best compromise with handling and ride comfort. That coupled with cartridge emulators transformed my Hondas handling.

I'm running a set of IKON's on the 400f now.  They are very nice.  Like Kemp said, coupled with a set of Race Tech front springs (non progressive rate) and emulators, plus a real fork brace, she is a monster.  We'll see how she compares with the new 400f that I'm building using GSXR forks and Ohlin's rears......that'll be the test!  But I love the IKONs.  And their rebuild kits are quite comprehensive.

Koni pulled out and sold the rights they didn't change the name. Hagon's are the the old Girling dampers, again rights were sold.
