Is this intake tube damaged? Take a look please.
« on: November 23, 2011, 04:27:13 PM »
Hey,

Just got my headwork done along with matching to the intake tubes and plenty other work besides on this head.

Man, I don't recall the intake tube on the far right being out-of-round?    I don't see any apparent damage other than it not being round in shape.   Is that the way it should be?  The other 3 look good.

If its damaged, any one have the right intake tube that'll fit the 77 CB550F.   The stamp on the part is B-8.

Sure hope that's the way it way supposed to be or I'll be contacting the machinist.

Thanks for looking..   Mark

I wonder if it was put in a vise when the work was done.

That would make sense.  It was packaged real well so I don't think it was in shipping.  So, we agree?  Shouldn't be like that?

looks like vice to me too, check for a corresponding mark of some kind where the other side would have been.

They are supposed to be round, and were from the factory.  I think they would be difficult to seal in an out-of-round condition.

Ya, I agree.   Went and looked on the internet and confirmed after posting.

Wonder if there is an easy way to re-shape it to round again.

If  not, will all CB550s and CB500s intake tubes be the same???   Anyone know?

Thanks,
Mark

You will want to avoid the intake runners destined for the PD carbs of the 77-78 Cb550K (no vacuum balancing ports).  The rest of the Cb550s will work with the 069a carbs of the Cb550F.

Perfect TT.  Now I know what I'm looking for.   One more question TT.   Would any CB500 or CB550 intake tube work as long as they have the Vacuum port you mentioned?

AFAIK, the Cb500 intake manifolds are the same as most of the Cb550s.  I haven't personally swapped them, though.

was that returned to you like that?its a major wrong thing,no way that was from the factory, take it back to your machinist and politley ask for a replacement,,there is no way that was ever used as it is,if it stuck out like a sore thumb now it would have when you took it apart,it wouldnt take much of a crimp to cause a crack though on that alloy,i think its been in the vise or similar too hard?ive had these things in the vice with rag wrapped around them and practised a little finnesse during cleaning etc,,i call foul!you certain it was fine before?

Yes, I'm sure it was fine before.  Not only that, I would think the machinist would have said something if it arrived in that condition.  I have sent an email to the machinist.   They are open the day after thanksgiving so I'll be giving them a call.  Sent them photos also.

I have a set of intakes from a 77 550F. If you need them, let me know.

put a couple heat lamps on it for a week.
it might return to the original condition.

I fell on my ski pole years ago and bent it pretty good.
I had a Vdub camper and stuck it up in the roof and forgot it.
When I found them again, it was straight again.

Hey, can't hurt.

I ended up heating it up considerably and pounded a tapered wood table leg into the opening.   Straightening it out pretty well.  Did buy a back up from ebay though that hasn't arrived yet.

Yes. I have installed vacuum ports in those that do not have them.

Thanks for the reply Mike.  I was able to find an identical set to the ones I have on ebay for cheap.
