750 Frame repair
« on: November 21, 2011, 09:12:13 AM »
In another thread, the poster bought a 750 with frame rust. Many talked of re-stamping a different frame to match the original and or the title. Wouldn't it be better to properly cut off the the steering head at the correct places and then reattach it properly to a good donor frame? Or, take the good parts off of the donor frame and replace the rusted section? I would think, that the frame damage would be somewhat localized. Re-stamping a frame looks to me like a can or worms in getting the absolute correct sized and shaped stamps and if done wrong, would be a "flag" that the legal system would or could be hard on.  JMHO What do you think?

I would NEVER cut up and reweld a frame just to get the numbers right.
There is no reason to do that. Just fear of the DMV???
I would just re register it some other way.

Depends where you live to a certain extend.  Where I am it would be a serious offense to alter the stamping of the frame number.
Easier to replace the damaged parts on the correct frame.  Usually it is the lower frame rails that suffer the most.

I am not sure where in the U.S. it is legal to stamp a frame. It may very well be legal, but how do you ask without raising eye brows? I do know after being in the old car hobby for many years and I do not know if it is 100% legal, but many bad car frames, get the original stamped number area transferred over to the good frame. Done properly, it looks proper and that is how I would do it. Since I am also in the car hobby, the ser. no. are everything, to the originality of the vehicle. If I were unable to repair a bad frame, I would find that good frame and transfer what I needed over to make it right, appear right and the paper work would match all the metal work. Again, this is how I would do it, your mileage may vary.

+1. Best case scenario would be buying a titled frame. Or get a title for the donor frame.
