Do the 77-78 550K come with Progressive springs?
« on: November 25, 2011, 07:08:33 PM »
There was a posting on here not to long ago that stated the 77-78 550K came from the factory with progressive springs. Info came from the clymers manual if I am remembering correctly. Now that I have a nice set of chrome ears and my tapered bearings I plan to install all. Since I have the front end off why not throw on  a new set of springs. Will I be wasting my time if I order a set? I am doing this to improve the front end suspension. Hoping for some insight,.. Thanks guys in advance.

If you already have the front end apart, can't you just look at one of the springs?

Thanks for responding Gordon. I do not have the front end off yet. I like to have my parts in hand before doing anything. I really hate having a bike sit as I am waiting for parts. Maybe I will take you advice and take all down and check to see if the springs are progressive. I was just curious if the info I read on here had any validity.

Mine were progressively wound. Not as much as a new set is, but they were. I opted to replace them because of age.

I didn't ask but I remember the thread. I still haven't ridden the bike bc my lazy a$$ never got a license. My brother said the suspension feels nice though. I think that probably has more to do with replacing the fluid. In retrospect, I think emulators were probably the way to go. If your forks felt ok before teardown, just replacing the fluid will really wake them up. Springs are super easy to install so if you wanted to do them later, you could.

Yeah, the stock ones are progressively wound.  Real sloppy junk too.   Springs are cheap though.
