Yamaha Turbo

Hey all, recently offered this '82 Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo.  They know of my interest in old bikes so owner's son in law sent me pics, asking is $800. Don't think it's ran in a few years, haha.  Guy says turbo is not working, based on the photos, I don't know how he knows that  :D

I know the turbo was only built 2 years, 82 & 83, would parts be an issue?  Haven't convinced myself if I want another project or just buy something running built in this century.  Help me out!

That would be a good "project bike" alright...if you have access to lots of NOS Yamaha parts & want to keep it until it turns as Vintage as our sohc4's... it can be a $ pit ! If you really had to have it...a 95% complete parts bike in fair cond. along w/ it would be a good deal for $800.The body work looks like it has spent all it's time away from the pavement & that's a plus. That one was  real "tech" when it was first introduced because turbo's back then were un-heard of...at least O.E. factory street bikes.
They had their share of teething problems though. I would see if you could speak w/ the Original owner or as close to it as possible & try to get the history of it & how often it was serviced & who serviced it(dealership hopefully),and go from there.I wouldn't purchase it without a solid line on a Yamaha Complete Factory service manual...because you WILL need THAT book.If you do purchase it...you will need lots of patience for parts searches because they are very Rare; to see one that hasn't been crashed,well that alone is rare. If you want it..offer him $400-500 & wait over the winter until he cries "uncle" & if you get it & fix it up properly to last you may have to plan on owning it for a good while. You would Have to Love it !

I could be wrong by being so pessimistic...if they let you look at it closely & possibly get it running w/ their new battery,you would know better if it was worth it.
Does she have a title ?

                                       They are collectible & that one looks Very Nice cosmetically.

Nope, I've pretty much convinced myself this isn't a project I want to tackle right now.  Also had some experience vintage rebuilder buddys poopoo the Seca model so....  The bike is about 200 miles away, but if my work gets me going past there, I'll prolly stop for a looksee anyhow.  Anybody else  interested in taking it on I'll set you up with the owner, shoot me a PM.

I know some guys over at xjbikes.com that would LOVE to have that bike. They would also probably like to know what your buddy's were smoking (no offence) as the XJ's, when tuned and restored are VERY reliable bikes.

Also they have an online vendor as part of the site that will have just about every part you need. The guy who runs the store is very reliable, knowledgeable, and provides OUTSTANDING customer service. I have personally ordered from him for my XJ (still being restored) and the only complaint I have is customs from US to Canada holds my parts for ever.

All the "wizards" on the site are VERY knowledgeable as well and will help out anyone who asks.

I'd suggest rethinking this Seca because every one on the site who has one LOVES them.

Don't have any pictures of either of mine right now or id put them up for you.

After ready your nice reply to Brooze I think I was out of line telling him to kind of "beware of problems"...I suppose it's all on how you look at it;for instance "I have a glass of water that is half FULL...rather than half empty. " thanks for the positive energy man !

Hey bobby, thanks for the reply & tip on the yammie site, I'll definitely check it out, if it's anything like this one, I will like it a lot.  I realize my buddys comments are just his opinion & we all tend to love what we got.  Don't know if I will get to see the bike before spring rolls back around, but now you got me reconsidering perhaps..we'll see.

Well even if you dont take it your self, there is a "sell, trade, swap, wanted| section. Throw it up on there. There arn't many Canadians on there but some of them are very close to the border and may be willing to drive to pick it up.   

I'd take it for myself but I still have my CB i need to pick up (which doesn't run), 2 XJ's that are in the restoration process, a XL175 with an electrical issue, and an old beat up 1970 pc50 moped I need to sell....
