Hello - also from Ohio.
« on: October 24, 2011, 12:15:36 PM »
Just wanted to say "hi" to everyone - I've been creeping the forums for a couple months now and recently registered.  Bought my 1st bike in August of this year - a 1975 CB550.

Got it with 9500 miles on it, and just retired it for the season with 10,050.  Been spending the last couple weeks tearing it down for restoration, and already these forums have proven quite helpful for tips and ideas on getting back in really nice shape... and since this is my first time tearing apart a bike, I think these forums will be extra helpful when it comes time to put it all back together!

Anyways, a big hello and thanks in advance to everyone.  Looks like there's a bunch of very knowledgable folks on here.

Hey, we've got Mono!  :o

Howdy, welcome!
Looks like you got a good running unmolested bike.

\m/  OZZY   \m/  -- haha saw him on his "retirement sucks" tour... the 1st time he retired. ;)

- and yes, it is in pretty good shape.  a lot of pieces have yellow paint dots on them, which i'm guessing means "junkyard parts" or somesuch replacement, but it's pretty much stock from what I can tell.

runs (ran) pretty good, but definitely needs a carb job - needed to leave the choke open about 20% or it wouldn't run.  leaked some fuel from one of the carb bowls, brake master needs work, pipes need replaced, and my rear right turn signal inexplicably died on me about a week before i parked it for the season.  other than that and some light rust [everywhere], she's in good shape and I got it for a steal.

Yellow paint on the bolt heads is from the factory.

Welcome,
Restoration.. Saaweet. Yellow crayon marks are a good sign. You are probably the first to wrench those pieces. How bad are your exhaust pipes?  Which ones are the worst? I have a set that could yield one or two good pipes.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Ben - the "outer" mufflers are by far the worst.  they've rusted through pretty extensively where they're welded to the pipes.  all of the mufflers have pretty good surface rust, though (mostly on the inside facing).  I may be intersted - show me whatcha got.

thanks! the color is actually what clinched it for me.  once i saw the sparkly olive green color of the '75s i just HAD to have one.  lucked out the next day!

now summer seems soooooo far away.  :P  i say "summer" becuase in ohio we only seem to have summer and winter.
