First rebuild CB400F 75
« on: December 17, 2011, 04:25:46 PM »
I tried buying this MC about 3 yrs ago could not come up with a agreeable price. owner's relative called me in April and I bought it. I had a hard time getting a title, but I did. I figured when I retire next year  I would rebuild it. I couldn't wait started it soon after I bought it. Last time it was licensed was in 1985 sat in a garage since then. Both wheels locked up and flat. Put some air in the tires and forced it on the truck with a lot of sweat. Alot of elbow greese went into cleaning it. rebuilt the front break system top to bottom. I rebuilt the carbs but bike still had a problem running and had to redue them. never done this before. Bike then statred up real easy. The electrical sysem was a problem from sitting around so long but worked through them and by aug was able to ride the bike. I still want to take the motor our to rebuild and clean. The frame will then be powder coated. i think the bike looks pretty decent right now but would like to make it even better. This is the original paint.
Almost there!

Welcome and congrats on both the bike and upcoming retirement. Bike looks very clean. how is the exhaust? Also, you plan to change out the tires before riding correct?

Welcome.  To add to Tews19--check the left frame rail in front of the sidestand to make sure it is not rusted.  Even though the bike can look clean, rust through there is a common  problem-I've had 3 400 fours rusted through at that area. Keep it stock, it'll be more valueable in the long run.  Wish I could retire but my school taxes are so damn high I have to work full time...Larry

Yes i replaced the tires first thing. After I took care of the electrical problems I went on a 140 mile ride. Ran great went with friends in case the bike broke down. The fram near the stand is still solid. Bike only had 2600 miles on it when I bought it this year.

I want to find a bigger bike to do even though I'm not done with this one.

What a find!. The 400F's are one of my favorites. Very nice bike.
If you're looking for another project, and want something bigger... the 750's are out there waiting to be restored or maybe even a cafe.

p.s. enjoy your retirement. It'll be 3 years for me on 5/17/2012  :)
