how much is this tank actually worth?
« on: November 26, 2011, 07:27:04 PM »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1975-Honda-CB550-Tank-/110779746967?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item19cafcca97&autorefresh=true#ht_500wt_1198

I need a tank to prep and paint nice untill i'm ready to swap over all the new parts for my bike to make it nicer looking. but I don't think a tank in this condition is worth this much..... what do you guys think?

It doesn't have enough pics man...the inside tells the story.I wonder what that white circle on the bottom left is all about...it looks like it was marked out for some reason.
I would ask him to give you a definite answer on the condition of the interior or pics to your email or the listing, etc.

The bottom of that tank looks like serious problems.  Does it hold fluid?

I don't know what that tank is really worth, but I don't think it is anywhere near $180.00 (plus the shipping which I didn't see)  If you need an interim tank, get the dented one for $25 +  $16.00 shipping and push the dent out with a 1/2" bar bent to a "j" shape.  I spent time looking and found several '78 K tanks in good condition for under $50 dollars each (plus shipping).  One was even a nos unused tank.

I would be afraid of it even though he states how 'Great' it is. Looks to have some major rusting issues along the bottom area,a known weak spot. I would not buy it for the $35.00 shipping let alone the asking price. Keep shopping and wait for better pics etc.

Anybody that only shows one picture of something and offers a sketchy description like that and asks for that kinda money is trouble that I walk away from. I didn't notice but how much stuff has this guy sold and what is his rating? (now curiousity takes me back for another look!!!).

He has 100% feedback but only on 3 items. If I were thinking of buying this tank for that kinda $$.......I'd wanna see what the other side of it looks like and a more detailed description like inside clean, rust anywhere, etc. I bought a Kerker Header some years back and while I could see visual damage to the underside of the pipes.....I didn't see a good enough picture of the muffler which was what I wanted. It looked OK in the picture but when I got my hands on it ($75 for the pipe & $25 shipping).....the muffler had scuff marks and battery acid stains. You gotta be careful and ask questions when buying sight unseen from someone far away that you have never met.

Too much!  I bought two bikes for 400, one complete, the other missing seat, side covers and airbox.  I also bought another about a month ago for about 200.  All have nice tanks, bit of surface rust inside that electrolyis will take care of.  If you're like me, recently I was in a bit of a panic cuz my first bike has rusted fork tubes, was about to pay too much for new ones with a whole bike to finish.  Then I dug around, even here on Vancouver Island where opportunities are few usually, and bingo.  Both bikes of the newer purchase have nice forks and one has an original exhaust that looks pretty darned nice.

I agree, that tank has a circle for a reason, right by the petcock and a scum line on the bottom like it's been in a puddle for a few years.  Keep looking locally.  If you just need a temporary fix, there's all sorts of things you could adapt.  Are there no bike wreckers in your area?

This is a 'raw-haw-haw' Supersport gas tank, I can just imagine the seller eating a turkey sandwich saying 'raw-haw-haw I got somebody to buy that tank'

It will start a trend with that seller "all I have to do take one good picture overprice it say nice things about it in the description BAM I'm quitting my day job'

Well if that's what he's doing Hondawggie...it's going to certainly come back to him, even if it's a "no returns accepted".

Yep takes some folks awhile to learn this

He used a white outline in the photo for 'plausible deniability' "I put right in the photo the bottom edge was rotted out"  like the others said above if you care about your customer forget the karma you show the defects set the price right and people go in eyes wide open life is short man

Does not look in "great condition" to me (as the listing states).  Ask for a pic of the inside.

I paid 220.00 shipped for a near perfect 75 CB400F tank on eBay about a month ago. Came with a key and short of small dime sized dent It was ready to bolt on. Zero rust and excellent factory paint.  YMMV.

Keep your eye peeled here everyday on the bikes/parts for sale and the bikes/parts wanted section. Lots of stuff comes up at any given time and goes quickly............especially the sought after stuff......ya gotta call dibs and wait in line............very fair & civil I think.

Keep good track of ebay........I have alot of listings for certain parts in my favorites. Example......1976 honda 750 gas tanks.A list of whats for sale comes on....check it all out.........go back to the top and change the 76 in the title to 75 and so on. Going from 76 down to 70 usually shows me something I like. I put it on my watch list and if I want it badly enough....I'll trip over my d%$# to get it . I also have Sidecovers,Exhaust,Seats on my favorites.

Stuff to be had on Craigslist also but you have to check alot of different areas. It would be cool if you could just punch in a part for a nation or worldwide search through all of Craigslist.

Another thing I discovered about Craigs is the "for sale" header is actually a button that allows searching all things for sale in a given area.  This is handy if someone puts a motorcycle in the garage sale category for example.

That's how I found a CB750 for $600. The old guy had it listed in the "autos for sale by dealer" and didn't get any calls!
It was a good runner with new professional paint, a great deal.
