Topic: gas or electric stove

Hey All,
So I have a 4 year old electric glass top. 4 burners and a warmer. One burner went out a year ago never ordered another only like 75.00. This lady I work with is dying for a dual oven stove. Well she is getting one on wed. and said i'm 3rd in line. Well she said it is mine if I want it. GE Profile series. 4 burners with a elongated center burner with an adapter for grilling.
I have a gas dryer and looks like very minimal to run gas up to the stove area.

Do you like cooking with gas or electric?
I think I'm going to love the gas.

+1 on gas.  We always had gas stoves back home in the north, much easier to control heat at the burners, however I hear a lot of people say that an electric oven is better then a gas one.  Not really sure why, but that's what I hear.  Anyway go with gas, and also get a pro to run that line.  That's not even something I'd mess with.

gas is the only way to cook tortillas. i miss it so much but we live propane is our only source of gas and that could expensive i would love to be able to have a gas stove again

Gas it is going to be.
Looks like i'll be getting the new/used stove after wed. The guy next door is licensed on the connection. He loves to cook and I loaded him up with my peppers and basil last summer. He loved it. So I really cant argue free stove and free hook up.

Im a Chef and gas is the way to go But... there are alot of commercial looking gas stoves for the home that absolutely S..k!  Check the btus of your current electric one and the gas one!  We just bought(at work) one last spring and I think its 28,000 BTUs It rocks! It will boil 4 gallons of water in 7-8 minutes.
 Gas will have hot spots in the oven unless its convection but we all still eat ok dont we? Its a tool. Learn how to use it. Youll be good to go. Like cubic inches theres no substitute for BTUS! Get as many as you can! You can always turn it down!
 And Free is always good!

GAS #1 I like to cook and control with gas is easier, we cheated Gas counter top and Electric wall oven do it on stove top then in the oven.

Ps Bender Electric stoves have hot spots too if you take a thermocouple and put it in the oven there will be a spot that's definitely warmer than the rest and it will vary between make and model as far as I'm concerned it is because the stove manufacturers have gotten sloppy, one the worst things that an Appliance tech could face was a little old lady that baked in her oven for 35 years and then her kids would by her a new one and she would burn things or they'd under done .

I agree with gas, generally with reservations.  I don't like pilot lights in the house in summer when it's sweaty balls hot, and they also cost money so match, striker or piezo spark.

I like electric  for broiling, top browning, toasting, etc. I like the radiant heat from an electric stove top broiler element. It crisps up things like nacho's, toast, pizza or whole plate mexican dishes.  I also like to put a couple minutes of final crisp on things like lasagna just before I pull it out, and gas oven doesn't  do it as well  that I know of.  You gotta watch it close though or it gets scorched.

I use Gss and the top burners work when the power is out. Just light it with a match. It suck being cold in the dark. It suck worse being cold and hungry in the dark.

Dang Bobby that's an interesting take. I have an electric range that's a total POS and will be replaced after Xmas (best sales on appliances happen in january). I was going to just replace it with another elect. but after reading your post I may reconsider. My thinking was my gas bill is already high and my electric bill is next to nothing, but having heat when the power goes out might be worth the extra cost. I can run gas pipe from the dryer no problem. Thanks for the tip.

My pleasure. I also have a gas water heater that runs off a pilot light and I have hot water also. My BBQ is natural gas also. My gas bills are fairly modest. I finally bought a Chinese generator 3KW and we lost power for 4 days in October. I had heat and some lights. I am trying to find a 5KW unit that will run off natural gas also. On day 3 I had to run out and find a gas station to make sure I had a reserve. My trusty K8 is my final 5 gal reserve    If I had Oil heat I would get a Diesel portable generator. I was not put on this Earth to suffer no matter what the Nuns taught me.

I have been having problems learning to cook with my new cast iron skillet on my gas range, I think it is because my burners are not large enough to evenly cook on the 12" skillet I have- the cooking is uneven on the skillet- too much in the middle. Never had problems like this with my aluminum skillets. 
I wind up using two burners to cook my bacon and eggs on the cast iron since my burners are apparantley not big enough.

I need bigger burners!! Gas all the way though.

I thought about installing solar panels big enough to power one outlet for a light and the electric fan and ignitor on my NG furnace. I have one big south facing gable roof just perfect for it. But so far I can't justify the cost. I do have gas hot water and dryer. Our power rarely goes out but it does happen from time to time.
