Topic: Pesky clutch retaining nut!!

A couple of times I have noticed people asking where they can get a special socket to tighten the clutch retaining nut on CB650's.

Here's how to avoid the expense of buying the special tool.

Grab a 30 mm socket with 12 segments. You will notice that the nut won't quite fit in so you need to run the outside of the nut over a grindstone wheel to remove a very small amount of metal to make a snug fit. Then cut four 4mm diameter nails or screws the length of the inside of the socket. Special tool made.

You need to lock the clutch by fitting a couple of the springs and winding in the screws tightly with a couple of brackets. I have used two spring retainers and a rag stuffed into the gears to stop the clutch rotating.

Place the nut into the top of the socket and fit the nails/screws into the four recessed sections of the nut to lock into place. With the nut still in the socket wind it onto the shaft and torque wrench up. Easy!

Special tool no. 2...Use the rear wheel spindle to screw into the end of the crankshaft to remove the generator. You will need to slide a heavy object onto the spindle to use as a slide hammer.

Special took no. 3....Use the front wheel spindle to screw onto the primary shaft to remove the shaft out of the gearbox. A heavy object on the spindle to use as a slide hammer helps.

OK so you have to strip the bike to get the parts but it cost nothing..............

I like the socket idea but I would be careful of putting any lateral torque on those aluminum spring towers in the clutch.

I see what you mean about the lateral force, it could be expensive if it gives. I suppose the best way is to tighen up when the engine is on the bike and it is in gear with rear brake on.
