Part out or fix up and flip?
« on: December 01, 2011, 09:12:58 PM »
I may be picking up a 750 which looks to be a 74' or 76? this weekend. It's pretty much all there The only thing that it looks like I would need to replace would be the seat, airbox and tires.

I think it could clean up nice, but my main question is how much time and money would it cost me to do a low budget restoration out of this bike.

Would it be better to part it out?
If anything I may end up keeping it and riding it for a while  ::)

He's asking for about 2 bills for the bike.

Any opinions or comments welcome.

Is a bill $100 or $1000?  I don't know cuz I never have any of either :'(...anyway $200 for a 750...you can't go wrong...if it's missing a lot of useable, stock body work I'd part it, otherwise the mechanical stuff generally cleans up/rebuilds pretty nicely
If it works good, it looks good...

He's asking 200 for it. I'm mainly asking because I haven't worked on a 750 (only 550's). And Have never tried to fix and flip a bike for cash. I've only sold the parts off them. But the ones I bought before were pretty beaten up and missing things. This one seems to be about 90% there.  with about "24000" miles on it.

I flip about 4 bikes a year, mainly 250 and 400cc machines, depends on the condition but even with a little tidy up and some cleaning you can make a $200 junker look like a possibly good start for a rebuild for somebody else, you just have to show them the potential. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

The BIG question ? Is it running right now??  If it IS running  I'd keep it and sell the 550. You will be SURPRISED at the power difference between the 2. keep it and build you a nice CAFE out of it or if you're not a CAFE or stock type guy build you a chopper/bobber. you can go to the following site to see what is possible!
http://hondachopper.com/
If it's not running and the engine is locked, the return to rideable condition goes up extremely. I've got 2 Honda choppers (SOHC) and spare parts. If you clean and flip you'll get the better price but it will need to be near PERFECT just to get 1500 or 2k on it, you're already looking at adding 3 to 4 hundred for tires and battery, and since the battery is shot you DON'T know the running CONDITION. Bikes like this can nickel and dime you and before you know it you've spent 1500$ on it and say you can only get 1700$ for it, is ALL your time and effort woth the 2 bills?? build it the way you like and ride it for another 10 years!!!

Does he have a title? $200 would be a fantastic price and you would not lose money on it no matter what you do with it. Heck, these never go for that price.

200 is a great price For even a parts bike. You could buy it and pass it along or whatever. Buy it first, get to know it, your heart will telll you what to do with it.

Thanks guys. I'm going to attempt to pick it up tomorrow. It has a title, so either way I win. It's not running as of now, but I'm sure I can get it running. With all of the knowledge I've learned from this site, it should be simple.  ::)

My 550 is a cafe by the way.

Parting it out would require disassembly, and potentially boxing and shipping (hassle) and will only get you about $550 in cash.  Cleaned up and running, with stock airbox and a seat cover, with even rattle can paint will be $1600-1800.  It is a nobrainer.
