point me to the right thread for upgrading my 77 cb550f engine?
« on: November 30, 2011, 10:46:05 PM »
im still not the sharpest at navigating these threads.  My poor little 550f is getting left in the dust of my friends rd350 and anybody else on the road pretty much.  im pretty slow getting off the line but my top speed isnt too bad.  get her around 105 or so before speed wobble takes over.  It runs great but im just looking for more acceleration and power.  i have uni pod filters but im unsure of the size of my jets.  First bike and still not 100 comfortable getting into the guts yet because it runs just fine.

I can understand that. The RD350 is one the fastest accelerators ever...
Is yours a 550F2 model? Testers In Germany were not enthousiastic about the F2's performance and were of the opinion that Honda had messed up by leaning out the mixture on this last model of the 500/550 series.

Stock 550F2's had no gators, 550F and 550F1 had.
Different front fender.
Different paint.

Rather than do alot of stuff to your 550 I suggest you buy another bike.  I have a 77 550F and It is not a fast accelerator but it has some fine points that make it a favorite.  I also have an 81 650c that i ride for transportation that has a bunch of low end torque and is a much faster bike. I ride the 550 because it is a neat bike unlike almost everything else on the road.

Back in the 70's, both of my brothers had CB750s. One brother liked to ride my RD350 because he liked the acceleration. My other brother rode it once and said he would never get on it again. I told him not to full throttle it in 1st or 2nd until he got used to it, but he went ahead and stood it straight up. God was watching him that day because he didn't drop it, but he may have had to change his shorts.
I love my 550F and it's mostly stock. Remember, it's getting close to 40 years old. If you want to go fast, buy one of the newer sport bikes and sign up for some track days. Riding on a track will make you a much better street rider.

I just want a little more getup and go is all. I don't like most of the newer bikes out there but maybe I'll get a project bike to play around with

Change the sprockets, got the adivce for my build. Will help a little with acceleration but lose top end speed. Not like I need to go 115 MPH.
