Hey, hey! Iowa checking in.
« on: December 02, 2011, 11:45:45 AM »
Hi all,

This is my first post as a registered entity on this site, but I've already used the search function to good effect.

I recently acquired a good-running '72 cb750 as a project bike, and also for nostalgia reasons.  My first cb750K was a '78, purchased used in 1988, after high school.

Currently we have four bikes in the stable:

1.  1972 cb350 (Wife's)
2.  1972 cb750 (light cafe project)
3.  2004 FJR1300
4.  2006 KLR650

Thanks in advance for all the useful knowledge here, and I look forward to perhaps contributing something helpful myself from time to time.

cb750 after I put the proper front end on, rescuing it from chopperland forever...

cb750 after the bars were switched out...

I got it a month or two ago, and have done the following to it so far:

--  Removed and completely rebuilt the petcock to get the leaker to stop stinking up the garage.
--  Removed 3" over forks and replaced with correct-length units.
--  Replaced idiot dash light harness with one that works.
--  Rebuilt brake caliper.
--  Removed 630 chain and sprocket set and replaced with 520 conversion set.
--  Changed bars, grips, mirrors.
--  Re-soldered start connection inside switch.
--  Replaced wire ends for front brake switch, start switch, and horn, replaced horn.
--  New clutch cable.
--  Removed throttle push cable.
--  Replaced battery.
--  Removed poorly executed highway pegs.
--  Removed and fixed right-side exhaust set.
--  Replaced outer clutch cover and screws.
--  Replaced hand levers.
--  Changed oil and filter.
--  Replaced oil pressure gauge.
--  New kickstart and shifter rubber.

That's all I can remember so far, and there's a few more parts coming in to keep going!

Yes, busy...but it keeps me more or less out of trouble...

I forgot to mention in the last post that I've also replaced a bunch of crappy old rubber parts like grommets and such.  I've also been finding out that parts that are painted black (bars, headlight ears, etc...) may need to have some of the black coating removed for electric ground purposes, like turn signals and starter buttons.

Here's a couple of more pictures of some recent progress:

--  Passenger pegs
--  Clutch cable bar adjuster
--  Black headlight fork ears
--  New rear sprocket nuts and lockwashers
--  Freshly wrapped wires where old loom was cracked/taken off

Thanks for the nice welcome so far!

How's it run with the pods and drag pipes?

Runs good!

Good enough that carburetor work is nearly the last thing on the to-do list.  I've done so many carbs over the years that it's my habit to go through them whenever I pick up a project bike.  Sometimes they won't run at all until I do.  This one is nice!

Granted, I haven't had it on a big ride, and the temps have been on the cool side since I got it, so it hasn't really been stretched yet.

The pipes are baffled, inserts held in by bolts, so there's *some* backpressure, and the filters are UNI, which seem to do a better job than others I've encountered.

That's what really made this one stand out when I was looking--tight motor, no leaks (except for the earlier-mentioned fuel tap), just a lot of really old stuff that needs some TLC and money.

I think that you should have kept the highway pegs. Just as a middle finger to the rest of the cafe croud. You would be folded over like a lawnchair if you tried to ride like that with those bars, but would have been nothing if not interesting to see the reaction of others. good luck and (watch out for SteveO)

I haven't binned the highway pegs just yet...   ;)

Saving them just for the steel brackets--welding project pieces perhaps?

Yeah, at 6'4" I'm folded up pretty good on this anyway.
