Black Metallic Flake
« on: November 25, 2011, 12:14:25 PM »
Would like to paint the bike soon.  Thinking I'll try the Spraymax 2k.  Looks like I can get pretty much any color.  So... I'm asking for suggestions on the exact Black metallic flake.  Yes, the bike will be black.  It may have some highlight tone of some color or another.  The bike will keep the same look it has though.  If I can not find the metallic that I like, I'll go with a gloss black.  If you know of a certain black metallic on another car or bike, please let me know!

Thanks...

I really want to get it gleaming again.  It has a real patina to it, that I do like, but its starting to just look really old.

If you don’t find the black metallic paint you want, do you like the black pearl paints?

Pearls reflect a certain percentage of light much in the same way as a metallic does, but without the bright metallic particles. The pearl paints use a ground (pearl) powder to accomplish the reflective effect. It used to be a high end color back when real pearl was used, but the synthetic pearls have brought the cost back down to earth.

Two that stand out are the: Acura crystal black pearl, paint code: NH-731P and Dodge brilliant black pearl, paint code: AXR

Several other other manufactures also offer their own version such as: Jaguar, Harley, BMW and even Hyundai. Worth a look.

Nighthawk Black I think it is a Honda car color.  Has blue mica in it.  A friend had his XS650 painted with it and the blue mica really shows in the sunlight.  I am going to use it for my 79 XS650 to replace the original black.

I had a chevy beretta that was black metallic, I can't remember the exact year. Sorry.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

+1. My Toyota Tacoma is Black Sand Pearl and is really sharp, especially in the sun.

Or do you want "Metal Flake", like what was popular on the old choppers and bass boats?

I might just like a pearl more... I would like it to stay in the black range and not change to blue in the sun.  A white or silver hue for the pearlescent would be ok.

Stop by your local Toyota dealer and look at the black trucks, I think you'll like it.

I found that out the hard way.  thought i was buying regular ol black paint to touch up some small spots on my 750F and now in the right light you can see blue-ish in some of the spots lol

If you want pearl - you can just go by the paint shop and buy it in small jars.  House of Kolor has a ton of options.   Can't figure how's you'd get it into a spraymax can though...

My Toyota FJ has a bit of metallic/pearl in it.   For me, I think it has too many colors of pearl/flake.

Take a trip to a car dealer and walk around.

Cadillac always has good pearls, although they are usually a 3-step process:  color, pearl, clear.

That's a nice bike - does it have enough paint on it to buff it ?   You'd be suprised what a little 3M rubbing compound on a foam pad attached to a drill can do.

If you have good paint coverage, you could even just scuff the black with some 800 (wet) and just apply a can of that clearmax with pearl mixed in and they hit it again with the clear without any pearl in it.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Thanks for the compliments on the bike.  The paint has fuel damage and a lot of wear from the tank pad.  The other stuff is badly faded, especially the fork tubes, they have started fading the black to white.  Nope, not buffable, tried that ;)

If you have a automotive paint mixer nearby , go and look at thier samples. You will find out that there is probably 500 DIFFERENT blacks.
To add to this ask to take the sample outside so you can see it under SUN light. I painted a 69 FIREBIRD many years ago with a Black IMRON (polyurathane) It aprkled like a BLACK pearl in the sunlight.
The major problem with spraying any color flakes or pearls is what's called striping, the flakes and pearls are heavier than the other pigments in the paint and tends to hang around the bottom of the spray cup.. Make sure you keep the paint mixed and agitated.., also use a crisscross pattern whenspraying. I don't know your painting experience but I'm just giving some pointers!
