cb500k and Oring chain,SORRY
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:30:58 AM »
   Sorry.
I have searched and did not find my answer.
I know there is issues with Oring chains on CB550's but I have seen nothing about the 500 fours.

I put a new non-oring on my 73 CB500k late this summer but after only a few hundred miles it is stretched terrible.Loose and tight spots.
I have never had so much trouble with a chain, must be a crappy one.T was considering trying an Oring chain.Never had one but I have friends run them and love em,but I was concerned with the 550 issues and wondered if it was the same with the 500s.

Otherwise does anybody recommend a good non Oringer?

Welcome tory b,
I wonder if you may have gotten a Real cheapo? also I recommend changing both of your sprockets at the same time. The chain & sprockets wear together; if you had put a new chain onto older(even if they look "ok"...)or worn sprockets it can wear your drive chain right out.I am also not sure about an O-ring chain on a CB500...I believe you will have a problem with clearance, the chain may come in contact w/ your engine cases & wear them down.

I love the small ones too !

DO NOT use an "O" ring on the 500 OR 550, they eat into the crankcase

For the last 100.000 kms my sprockets have always lasted two standard chains. Around 15.000 kms each chain, so a set of sprocket lasted 30.000 kms. I remember this was common practice for 500 owners in those days. It's the pitch that counts and when they wear evenly I don't see a reason why you can't use the sprockets on another chain. You can also flip them over, why not? The power ouput of a 500 or 550 is modest. The 'wisdom' that you have to change your sprockets with every chain is echoed over and over again and it is one of the blessings of the internet that these lies become 'true' because everyone keeps repeating what they've found... on the internet. Think about it! We all bear responsibility here.
Only once did I mount an O-ring chain. I wasn't impressed. I don't think it did any damage to the crankcase however, contrary to the experience of 550 owners. But next time I´m in there, I´ll certainly have a closer look. Am I mistaken or is it mostly 550 owners that have this complaint?

Don't think you can go o-ring w/o a mod.

I used to buy two chains and a set of sprockets.
Fit 'New' new chain around 3,000 miles then 'clean and rotate every 4~5,000 miles and they seem to last a lot longer than just fitting a new chain to 'old' sprockets
Most 'O' ring chains are substantilly wider than stock but a few are about the same overall width (use thinner side plates)
DID seem to be pretty wide Regina sem to be a bit narrower
'Easiest' thing to do would be fit 520 with spacers behind them and get some extra clearance.
Personally, I'm not too impressed with 'O'ring chain, they need just as much maintainance as standard, only the pins are 'sealed', the bushings still need lube
I fake being smart pretty good

So Delta, are you saying it is not necessary to replace the sprockets every time you change out the chain? On average how long does the chain last for? Does it all depend on the style of riding? HArd and agressive V. nice and gentle?

I think it has just as much to do with proper maintenance and when adj. a lot of people don't think about how the swingarm plays into it and set it too tight.

Also right. It's all about common sense.

Its seems the only people I see with issues are the 550s.I have searched over and over but have not seem a 500 owner with the problem.I know they are very similer, there are differances.

I will probably stick with a HD non roller to be safe, but what brands are recomended?
