1971 CB750
« on: December 04, 2011, 06:41:47 PM »
So I have been following others builds on the site for a while but never put any of my stuff on here. So here is my story and build. This is how this bike started. First my neighbor had a 1992 suzuki DR250 bought it off him for a 100 bucks pretty clean bike. Found a guy on craigslist said he was looking to trade his CB750 for a DR350. I sent him a msg told him what I had and we swapped lucky me. Here is what it looked like when I got it.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

It was a pretty good trade I agree. I threw a new battery in it and she fired right up! Did not run that well though because the exhaust pipes were rusted out and so it bogged down real bad and the clutch was stuck engaged and the brakes were not hooked up.......this didnt stop me from taking it for a rather scary ride though haha.

When I got the bike the guy before me had swapped a gold wing front end on it so he could use the comstar mag wheels and have dual disk breaks. I personally like spokes better so I pulled that front end off and put on the original front end and spoke wheel. The guy also gave me multiple boxes of parts including about three front ends and molds for making new fiberglass fenders and side covers. The bike had some dents and so i went to work sanding and doing some fiberglass work to cover the dents and emblems. I also bobbed the rear fender, bullet tail light, and clubman bars.

After doing all the work to the tank and new side covers, I started thinking what is the point of doing all this work if the front forks still like crap and are rusty and the wiring looks like a rats nest. So i ripped all the wiring out, took all the lights, mirrors etc. Just going to run a headlight tail lamp and if I get pulled over....well it wont be the first time or the last. Anyways picked up a 2007 GSXR front end off ebay for about $250. Luckily I had about three different CB750 triple clamps to experiment with. I pulled the stem out of the lower triple clamp and pressed it into the GSXR lower clamp. In doing this conversion I also cut a groove in the cb750 stem to allow it use the little ring and groove off the gsxr stem to lock in place. I also had to build the cb750 stem up a little to make it fit. I also removed all the electronics and strarted to make a custom wire harness and moved the battery tray to the back of the frame. However I think now I am going to cut that out again and run a battery less system by using Cycle X alternator when i get some money saved up. I also removed the oil tank and cut it to pieces saving the oil line bungs so I can build a custom tank out of a fire extinguisher. Also my exhaust was rustier then all hell so I went with a MAC 4-1.

So here is how the bike looks right now

For the front wheel I was going to try and just use the stock 750 wheel. I ordered up some bearings that were the correct size OD to fit into the 750 hub and the correct diameter to fit the gsxr axle. After putting this together I realized the 750 hub was far too narrow and would require alot of work fabricating spacers and also spacers for the disk brakes. Here is a picture of the 750 with bearing to fit the gsxr axle. Ill try and put the wheel on and take a picture so people can see the spacing issues of using a 750 rim with gsxr forks

Instead of messing with the stock 750 wheel I bought a 2008 Harley Dyna wheel 19" off ebay for like 50 bucks! And bought a set of GSXR bearing. So now I need to pull the bearings out of the harley hub....which i need to figure out how to do I am thinking a blind bearing puller? And I also need to swap the tire over which I was trying to do with my tire irons and it has proven to be pretty difficult. I also need to find some gsxr disk breaks and re drill them to the pattern of the harley hub and find some gsxr beak calipers, and machine a spacer to go between the wheel bearings. The wheel with the tire is the stock 750 rim and the other is a 2008 Harley Dyna dual disk.
