I have been looking for my next project bike and this time around I was looking to go Cafe. I finally found the barn find of my life and my first order of business was to take a look at the engine. The only negative thing I had delivered to me about the whole bike was that it ran but started to exhibit an engine knock. knowing this I got it all drained, cleaned up a bit and pulled. Here is the evidence I have noticed on the cam



And here is the Rocker matching it.



To a trained eye, does this look bad enough to repair or can I just slap it back together and redo spring adjustment?

From what I have seen digging in to this motor, I have been debating on if to rebuild it completely. I have not formally done a complete rebuild before and can tell that deeper in to it, it has good compression (though I screwed up and didn't get a reading with my pressure gauge before tearing it down.

Welcome to the forums.. Is the cam and rocker arm perfect no will they work I would think so. I just got done with rebuilding my 550 engine and my cam and rocker arm were similar. I bought a 650 cam they are pretty cheap 40$ and it just drops right in dont have to do anything special and is a nice little gain on horsepower. Type 650 cam in the search engine will get lots of info. Goodluck to ya..

How many mikes on the motor? Since you have it apart, I would replace those parts.

                  I think once you install a good camshaft & rockers and then start it up and listen/ride it to sort out what other noise, if any you have you can do a compression test after it has warmed up;have you found a cam yet ?

I will admit that I was hoping I wouldn't see enough damage to "want" to replace anything internally. So with that being said, I have not shopped around for a replacement cam yet. My other decision to break open the engine was to gets the parts media blasted but I want to make sure I can get the complete rebuild kit first before digging further in to the engine.
The bike only has 28,000 miles on it and from what I can see so far, I'm tempted to throw it back together, and turn my focus on getting the carbs rebuild so I can get it test setup and see if she will fire up.

A replacement camshaft & the appropriate replacement rocker arms will sure be a good start to your rebuild parts stash.
