Thanks guys. Is damage to the starter clutch something that can be repaired or will I have to replace it?

Usually it will need replaced.  I have seen the rollers crack and chip and the springs fail.  The housing will distort also causing unreliable operation.  Best bet is a used one off eBay, they aren't a common failure so their is a supply of good used ones.  Disassemble first, sludge can stick the rollers also and then you just need a cleaning.

This may be a long shot but is sounds like you are going to want to take the alternator cover off anyway.

I had the starter gear (part #1) strip four of the small teeth off of the gear on my '75.

It would not happen all the time but it would make a similar noise to what you are noticing when you let off the starter button.  I replaced that gear with one off of a spare motor I had sitting around it is hasn't given me a problem since.

While you have the cover off, check to make sure all the gears associated with the starter still have all of their teeth.
