CB350K4 twin...aftermarket cyl. studs needed.
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:33:01 AM »
I am looking to upgrade all 8 of my O.E. cylinder studs on my CB350K4 twin and I want to get stronger than stock;the original ones are made from "weeny" soft steel and stretch easy if over-torqued.I have found a source to get standard width metric studs that will tighten down the top end very well...the only question that I have is this: will the oil flow past the larger diameter full size cylinder studs with enough volume to keep the upper camshaft, cam bearings & rockers fully lubricated through the entire rpm range of operation ?? I have asked this question on the Honda twins forum...and so far I haven't heard any response; Does anyone know of club racers or other people who have done some research on this and found out the Best aftermarket studs to use that will not stretch like the O.E. ? I know the max torque should only be 14.5 ft.lbs. .....but not everyone follows the Book on those specs, if you know what I mean...and the Originals are Very skinny indeed;I think they are weaker than they should be & I most certainly want to improve them to have years of enjoyable miles and many trouble free rebuilds to come.

Thanks for your valuable input !

M3 racing sells these studs. You should ask him what he thinks: http://www.m3racing.com/products/parts.html I recommend their "Cam chain control system" as well while you're in there if you're looking for reliability.

I bought a couple engines already built(bigbore etc) with the bigger studs, so I'm not sure how that was handled.

BUT, I did turn one of those engines back to stock specs for racing with a completely stock top end from the cylinders up. with no mods other than making room for the KA cam chain tensioner. I didn't have any cam related issues all race season. Piston issues and a porous cylinder head leaking oil early on, YES, but no lack of oil up top issues at all. The cam looks as it did when I installed it over the winter. I've been torquing the nuts to 20-25 ft/lbs. If you're using the covered "acorn" nuts, make sure they do NOT bottom out inside the nuts. Use extra washers, or open Nylock nuts like I did.

Good luck,

TimV

Thanks for those links guys...I'll keep doing research before I decide if I'll use the standard large diameter aftermarket studs rather than  the "turned down shank" look of the much weaker stock O.E. studs.
