Pipe Question
« on: December 05, 2011, 05:36:51 AM »
Into my 74 550 rebuild.  The stock mufflers, at least three of them, were trash with big holes in them.  The downtubes cleaned up great, not new but nice enough to use until I go better later. Quite blingy if I say so myself.  By the way, using Liquid Wrench and OO steel wool works great on cleaning, and removing light rust.

I cut the pipes at the junction of the mufflers and my thoughts are finding, or building, a collector on each side and fitting an aftermarket muffler on that.  Can you all give me some options.  For all I know, someone sells them outright.

Look here for a low cost option. Not the highest quality, but affordable. I believe they come with adaptors to fit different size pipes. And there are a few different styles too.

Those pipes at JC Whitney look like just what I was looking for.  I like the Macs that orange led me too, but may be a bit rich for my blood right now.  I wasn't positive if the price was for a pair, but the checkout did say mufflers, with an s.

Now I need to collect the Dunstalls from two to one.  Can I find a chrome piece for that?  I'm gonna call JCW today and see what they say.

I doubt JC has the piece you need. Call your local muffler shop, they should be able to fab something for you

I  have planned on using early eighties YAMAHA fz cans that are 4-2 for my 350f , then I found a spaghetti pipe and now I will only use one side.  They are the right diameter and have collectors that will clamp right on.

Keep an eye on cheap  e-bay for stuff similar that can be grafted.

There's a set of very nice looking four-into-four pipes for a 550 now listed on eBay with no bids yet at $150 opening.  They look to be in really nice shape.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-Honda-CB550-CB550K-OEM-Exhaust-4x4-4into4-/320807979416?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item4ab1a54998#ht_500wt_1413

Those are nice pipes and a good deal if you could get them for $200.

Those pipes won't fit a '74 without extensive modifications to the mounting brackets. Been there, done that, talked out of it by knowledgable people here.

I'm really kind of set on 4 into 2, or even 4 into 1.

4 into 2 will give some performance gains but will require rejetting if it is loose

as loose as it gets without popping is 110 mains and 40 slows  on the 74
