The powder coater obviously does not know much about vintage bikes and how important these tags are. I guess the lesson learned here is do it yourself. I can not believe he just blasted it off. I think he forgot about it and just did not feel like doing it...lazy!!! That is not acceptable. He should pay for his mistake not you. Can you tell us who he is? We would like to steer clear of this guy.

I don't know about everyone else but if i see any monkey business around the serials  it's not a bike i want, even if i knew the circumstance and the owner it would still devalue it.
I went through my collection tonight in fact, found a cop, son of a friend to run #'s.

One plate has been tanpered with, so see what cmes up and proceed from there.

I just did a 550K 'frame swap' for a member of a local forum. Powder coated by a small, but recommended firm, the new frame was gorgeous. The steering head races and frame tag were delivered in a bag. The races had been cleaned, and the tag was only slightly bent, but cleaned and serviceable.

Original plate had rivets, and most had double sided tape type adhesive also.  No excuse for blasting that area at all without protection for the plate.  Electrical tape works because its rubbery consistency resists the abrasive blast.  I tape the tag and then only blast near it with a light sanding to smooth the edges.  The plate can also stay on throughout the coating process with high heat tape protecting it.  The guy was a moron.

Exactly fiddy of industry 99% of the time it's going to be nothing, but bikes that are stolen go some where and i don't want to be stuck holding the bag.

I don't think the plate is so much a proof of serial or vin number, after all, the numbers are stamped on the neck and will show signs of tampering. To me, the plate is the finishing touch of a restore. I had a frame sandblasted and straightened and made it very clear to the people working on it how important that little plate was to me and the bike. The fellow that did the frame carefully removed it and the plate will be the final piece going on the bike when I'm satisfied that I've done what I can to bring it back to what is was years ago.
When the bike is parked, almost the first real look at it is at the plate to see the date of manufacture. Of course, the unfortunate people that don't know anything about these bikes don't care however it is an important part of the bike to me.
I don't think I would have been as restrained as Don R was when I picked up the frame.
Cliff.

I lost just about everything when it over wrote inf. files.(I also screwed up doing a restore  :()
I remove the plate myself before anyone does anything to frame.

Let me put this on my list of why I don;t like getting frames powdercoated.

Out of the loss of your plate, your thread has turned up a great resource for others like myself that were trying to figure out how to replace my own. Thanks, and sorry all the same.

Same here. I also have a mangled tag I'd like to get a copy of.

I'm sorry to hear what happened...I'd be furious if I were you, especially considering they just tossed it in the garbage afterwards.

I was at the barber shop this afternoon and two of the powder coaters customers were there, I was polite but they did hear my opinion.
Like I said, this bike won't be an exact original resto but only you guys will ever know the difference. I'm getting a plate made and it's done.
I hope the discussion was helpful to my SOHC Honda friends.

Hi-

I'm the guy who started the "CR750 for the street" thread in the Project Shop forum, and I've looked all over the place for someone who'll make an exact copy of the VIN plate in metal. I checked out the places that sell kind of all-purpose plates and the places that sell stickers that look kind of like the plate on the bike, and then I found a place up in Washington State called Nostalgic Reflections that actually makes perfect copies of all sorts of tags, emblems, and plates including VIN plates. You can check them out here: www.NostalgicReflections.com

It's not cheap, but if you want to have a brand new plate to go with your brand new paint and chrome, I haven't found any other way to get it. The fellow that runs the business will give a substantial price break for multiple copies. The first copy is $285, and an additional copy is $110, but if ten are ordered, the additional nine are $85 each. At twenty copies, they're $55 each. The cost for stamping your original VIN number on the plate is $45 per plate. Again, this is not cheap. I'm going to get one, because I'm determined to have a bike that looks like it just rolled out of the factory. Or maybe just because I'm nuts. But if other people want to get plates, we can order together and divide up the cost so it's cheaper for everyone.

Sorry, didn't mean it's done,  I meant I'm done with the subject. I will get a plate though.

I'm wondering about getting some silk screened, they might be too small. I wonder what technology would work for making some?

How did Honda do it?  It would still scream "plate change" without the patina of age.

+1 on removing the original VIN plate. I used thin double faced tape and new brass rivets/pins from Grainger. To peen the rivets I made a special punch with a ball mill to match the head size. Turned out well.

I don't know how they are made.  Aside from a rub mark from a cable mine looked really good, I don't think lack of patina is worse than lack of a tag. To be honest, my parts have a little too much patina for the frame now.
