ruined frame tag on my K0
« on: December 06, 2011, 10:07:59 AM »
I powder coated my frame and after re-assuring me he should remove the frame tag and that he could do it without a problem, this AM I pick up my parts and he tells me it's ruined and thrown away.
Is there a facsimilie I can get to install in it's place? The neck numbers are still readable. I told him how unhappy I am, I may have held in a little cause it would have been ugly.

Very unprofessional.  I'd probably ask to recoup all costs or I'd sue.  I do remember seeing blank vin plates on ebay.

There's an ebay seller who sells printed stickers for a few bucks.
There's another ebay seller who has metal plates that he will stamp with your number but he's in Europe and charges ~$40 or so if I recall.

A related question, assuming you still have the metal plate where does one find the tiny metal pins that hold it on?

Really?  Replace the frame with what exactly?  The frame numbers are stamped on the left side of the steering head.  The vin tag doesn't actually prove the frame number, the stamped numbers do.

Vin tags are replacable.  Go to ebay and search vin tags for z50.  You will find a seller that makes a decal that is identicle to the CB750 vin tag.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-Z50-US-MODEL-HEADTUBE-TAG-FRAME-DECAL-REPRO-/150560204642?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item230e166762  Go to Plaque Maker and order an aluminum tag size 3.75" x 1.25" with rounded corners http://www.plaquemaker.com/Plates/Metal_Name_Tags.html  You can get the rivets from McMaster Carr.  They are under nails http://www.mcmaster.com/#screw-nails/=f8zkw8  You should be able to put together a new vin tag for under $70 that is pretty authentic looking.  Of course the powder coater should pay for it but I don't think you need a frame replacement.

It doesn't exist, he  blasted it off the frame, he said he tried to remove it but the rivet heads are intact on the frame. F-er told me he does it all the time and could remove it no problem.

I don't have the original engine but I did go to extreme lengths to use this frame because it was a relatively low number diecast. I cut up another frame and welded in pieces where this frame was damaged or rusted. The two tubes under the tank were hacked so I bought a gordons kit and welded the center from another bike back in.

Thanks for the info on the tags, it takes a little of the sting out.

For anyone going to powder coat, I would center punch the rivet heads and carefully drill them off. Pry the tag loose and I read you can push the rivet stem through the hole.

Don.

There is a member who has them. I bought 4 off of hm when I was doing mine, and got them in first try so I have 2 left over... somewhere.

If you really need them make a wtb post in the classifieds and he will probably surface again.

They are "spin rivets" or the equivalent. They have spiral cut splines and they turn as you drive them in locking them in place.

Push come to shove I'll look for my extras.

Yeah that is really a bum deal. If you can stand to deal with him I'd buy one of the aftermarket plates. Check Yamiya too, and have him pay forit.

BTW: The way to get them off is to grind the head off the rivets, then using a straight razor, slice underneath as there is an adhesive holding it on. It will still deform.

I was able to resurrect mine using a piece of PVC of theright diameter as a dolly, and tapping it back into shape. You can never tell.

+1 on making him pay for a new plate.  There would be no way I'd ever let someone like that off the hook without making it right.

HONDA HAVE IT PART 90841-001-000 SPIN RIVET
What you'll find is that from most US suppliers it is unavailable. Better luck with David Silvers Spares or the like.

In this thread is the member who has a box of generic spin rivets. Not the same guy i bot mine from I think, maybe it is.

To finish my plate install, I smeared some all weather construction adhesive on it. Its newly formed curve was just a little tighter than the steering stem tube. So when I pushed it on the edges were nice and flat against the metal.

Tapped in the rivets, wiped off the glue and perfect.

Unless you are really attached to it, I'd consider leaving it off at this point. The VIN is permanent stamped in the other side of the frame.

I'd understand if you could get a plate that said all the old plate did. But short of that, what's the point?

still the powder coat guy done you wrong. Where was his head at?

The powder coater obviously does not know much about vintage bikes and how important these tags are. I guess the lesson learned here is do it yourself. I can not believe he just blasted it off. I think he forgot about it and just did not feel like doing it...lazy!!! That is not acceptable. He should pay for his mistake not you. Can you tell us who he is? We would like to steer clear of this guy.

I can understand a personal preference to having the plate. But no one should be squeamish about the plate missing. The truth is stamped in the other side.

Now if that side were messed with, I have a problem.  Or so i think. Am I wrong?

The powder coater is in Biggsville Illinois. He came recommended from friends. I just wanted the bike to look original, it never will be, but I was proud of the 11/69 build date.  Hell, I have a beautiful K4 frame I could have used with a lot less work.
I don't ever plan to sell it so I'm not really out much.
It's just that we talked about the tag, I specificly asked if I should remove it. He offered to remove it and said he has done it before.   I read here someone left his on and it was fine. Otherwise it would have been off before I left home.

Moral of the story, remove your own tag rather than trust some goomba with a sandblaster.
