the gp racers have been using a version of this for a couple of years now . there is a jacket  for sale for the road but at the moment it is bloody expensive

Horse riders also use inflatable vests for equine events, they ain't cheap though.

Reminds me of many years ago, some brainiac thought seat belts for riders were a good idea.  It resulted in decapitation, every single time, thankfully to crash test dummies.
