All of this gitfiddle talk has me playing my Steinberger tonight.  This guitar is so sweet.  It is 31 inches stem to stern and plays at least as well as my Fender Strat.  You'd usually never consider playing a guitar while in a car or other tight space - not true with this baby.  I really don't care that it does not have a fancy curved body or "pretty head"... it has good pickups, controls and action - it just plays nice.

I've always liked the idea of the trans trem, I don't really pull or push on tremolos much unless I have time to tune afterwards, and that gizmo was supposed to work well.

I never did update but this is still floating out in the digital world so here goes.

I ended up  with more and more finger trouble. It IS trigger finger, I found a hand specialist and had 4 of them operated on last winter. I auctually went to guitar lessons bandaged up. We worked on theory etc. It takes a long while for the tendons to stretch out afterwards. Now they are much better, I can get some reach and nothing locks up anymore. I'm still not very good but I enjoy it and it's finally coming around.
I'm playing a Les Paul with a Les Trem on it. It stays in tune well, I've done a bit of work to it to keep the high E string from breaking at the tremelo hinge, I think I got it now.
A salesman  just asked me about the Steinberger, he sold one to a guy that carries it on his motorcycle a lot. He said it rides well in a gig bag on his back and out of the wind.

It IS trigger finger

Sounds like Carpal tunnel, i have a friend that plays and was stopped by the same thing, his fingers were slowly curling in and he couldn't open up his hand properly, he had to have an operation as well...

Common fisherman ailment. One guy had both his hands done at the same time. Quicker done with and ony one OR visit and hospital stay, but he had to have someone around to wipe for him for a dozen weeks or so.

Hmm I need to spend more time with the guitars. Got a couple new Canadian ones.

I have two trigger fingers (left ring finger and right middle) and it kinda comes and goes.  It's been much worse (than it is now) and I think how good or bad it gets is related to diet and exercise.  Both are on joints that were injured pretty badly (one crushed, one dislocated).  I think mine are not related to carpal tunnel syndrome.

So far the trigger finger does not affect my guitar playing.  Rather, they tend to "lock up" when I'm gripping something tightly and exerting a lot of force.  Opening them back up can be quite a challenge and straightening them out seems to stretch something (tendon I guess) throughout my hand until it "pops" and frees up.

I work with a guy who had one surgically fixed (pinky on right hand) and then had his left one do the same.  He just left it.  The doctor wanted to work on real bad and he said, "ah hell, just cut it off".  The doctor stop insisting it be fixed.

I found a Trigger Finger specialist in Peoria Il. he does several every wendsday. It is aggrivated by repetitive gripping and is most common in women and diabetics. A lump developes on the tendon and then it gets stuck in the sheath it slides through. They open up the sheath to allow the lump to fit through. Somehow the result is the tendon seems shorter and takes time to stretch back out.
In my case it seems to be inhereted as many of my relatives have it too.

He auctually did them in the office on a tray right there in front of me  :'( while I sat in a chair. It saves a bunch of money and keeps everyone out of the hospital. My GP said he does about 5 a week. When I asked, he had done 5 already that day. One hand at a time to allow sanitary duties.
